Mauricio Pochettino ‘upset about the debate in England’ after late goal beats Newcastle United

Mauricio Pochettino watched on as his team won their second game in four days late on at Wembley.

On Wednesday, Tottenham trailed to Watford but scored twice in the final 10 minutes to turn it around.

Whilst on Saturday it was an 83rd minute Son winner that proved to be the only goal of the match.

Llorente scored the winning goal on Wednesday and against Newcastle he came off the bench to set up Son for his goal.

Despite Kane still being injured, Mauricio Pochettino named Llorente as a sub, and after being questioned as to why he started without a recognised out and out striker, the Spurs boss said:

‘Llorente, after Harry Kane’s injury, plays four games in a row and with three days recovery the normal thing is to rotate. It upsets me a little bit because the debate in England is difficult to understand. You have 24 players you need to use.’

The need to look after players was seen in midweek when Rafa Benitez reaped the benefits of having saved Salomon Rondon for the Man City match, having left him out against Watford in the FA Cup three days earlier.

However, whilst Mauricio Pochettino has 24 players he doesn’t mind using, today Rafa Benitez was missing  nine of his squad and the lack of depth was shown in that Watford FA Cup match when he was forced to play Joselu.

Before the Tottenham game, Rafa indicated he hoped to have some extra players available for Wolves in nine days time and then the vast majority of his squad then available for Huddersfield in three weeks time.

Newcastle fans looking forward to seeing what Miguel Almiron can do once he sorts his work permit.

Mauricio Pochettino:

“It was so tough to break down a team like Newcastle.

“That showed the belief and the capacity of the team to get the result.

“The character we are showing is fantastic.

“It was difficult to find space.

“We created some chances in the first and second half but the most important thing in the end is to keep pushing and it was a massive effort again in the second game consecutively.

“Once again I need to praise my players.

“Llorente, after Harry Kane’s injury, plays four games in a row and with three days recovery the normal thing is to rotate.

“It upsets me a little bit because the debate in England is difficult to understand.

“You have 24 players you need to use.”
