Martin Dubravka stunned but not surprised by Newcastle United fans – The stats that back it up

A lot of positive stories on Saturday and Martin Dubravka was one of them.

The keeper letting a couple of goals in recently that he would usually deal with, although the one at Wolves was a clear foul anyway.

That still didn’t stop the media going way over the top. Embarrassingly, the Chronicle running a poll asking if Martin Dubravka should be dropped (the question being which keeper should play against Huddersfield).

On Saturday though it was total support from the Newcastle fans and a faultless performance from the keeper. He didn’t really have a save to make but in the first half he came and took a number of dangerous crosses that eliminated any danger for the defenders in front of him, showing that Dubravka was still confident and keen to show it.

Only four clubs have now conceded less goals this season than Newcastle United and Martin Dubravka, as he picked up his eighth Premier League clean sheet of the season.

Martin Dubravka speaking to the Chronicle about the Newcastle fans on Saturday showing their support for him:

“I don’t know what to say.

“It was just amazing…

“As soon as I came on the pitch they supported all of us.

“Look at the banner for Almiron, what a feeling for him on his debut, he also had a standing ovation.

“The players can build confidence off that and I really appreciate that, they [the fans] stay behind us all the time.

“The fans are special here.

“You can feel it at home and away, they travel wherever we go and stay with us.

“That’s why it was amazing that we were able to celebrate together at the end of a great win.

“I don’t know how many chances we created out there but Jonas Lossl did an amazing job at the other end, he kept his team in the game

“I didn’t have to deal with any shots in the game because our players were amazing too.”

Martin Dubravka has been first choice since he arrived, making his debut a year and two weeks ago, 11 February 2018 against Man Utd, he has been consistently excellent.

In his entire time at Newcastle, Dubravka has now played 39 PL games and only conceded 45 goals in total, pretty phenomenal when playing for a team constantly battling relegation during that time.

This is how the bottom seven of the Premier League now looks in terms of goals conceded this season (2018/19) so far:

30 points Burnley (48 goals conceded)

28 points Newcastle United (34 goals conceded)

27 points Brighton (39 goals conceded)

25 points Cardiff (52 goals conceded)

24 points Southampton (46 goals conceded)

17 points Fulham (61 goals conceded)

11 points Huddersfield (50 goals conceded)

Only five clubs in the entire Premier League have conceded less goals than Newcastle/Martin Dubravka this season.
