Mark Lawrenson predicts Newcastle v Huddersfield Town

Mark Lawrenson has been looking ahead to Saturday at St James Park.

Before scoring a consolation goal in added time in the 2-1 defeat to Arsenal, Huddersfield hadn’t scored a goal in their previous 10 hours of football.

So just as well we have this insight from Mark Lawrenson…’I just don’t fancy Huddersfield to score at the moment.’

In actual fact, Huddersfield have scored the lowest number of goals (14) in the five big European league (France, Italy, Spain, England and Germany).

Last season, West Brom finished bottom of the table and lost 19 games, Huddersfield have already matched that with 12 games still to play (currently played 26 Won 2 Drawn 5 Lost 19). That total of 19 defeats so far, is also the worst in the big five leagues.

Newcastle aren’t exactly free scoring but with seven goals in their last five games, it is an improvement on only 15 in the first 21 matches, especially when four of the these last five opponents are sitting in the top seven.

When you consider only five clubs have conceded less goals than Newcastle, no reason why Rafa’s players can’t keep a clean sheet and find at least one goal from somewhere.

Nothing can be taken for granted but when an opponent only has one point from a possible last 39, a home win is a must.

Mark Lawrenson going for a two goal Newcastle victory and clean sheet.

Mark Lawrenson talking to BBC Sport:

“This is a game Newcastle really have to win and they could climb a few places up the table if they do.

“The Magpies should win it too.

“They are playing a team who are bottom and have taken one point from their past 13 games.

“I just don’t fancy Huddersfield to score at the moment.

“Which is another reason I think Rafa Benitez’ side will come out on top.

“Prediction is Newcastle 2 Huddersfield 0.”
