Leicester City Official Statement confirms Claude Puel sacking – Rafa Benitez rumours intensify
Leicester City have sacked Claude Puel on Sunday morning.
An official statement (see below) confirming yet another one has left the King Power.
With a draw and five defeats in the six previous games, including Newport knocking them out of the FA Cup, a 4-1 home loss to Crystal Palace was the final straw on Saturday.
There has been repeated speculation that Leicester City are interested in Rafa Benitez as Puel’s replacement.
That speculation now intensifying with the sacking.
It looks sure that the Foxes will wait until the summer before making a permanent appointment.
Only 11 more Premier League games to go, the same for Rafa Benitez as it stands at Newcastle.
Recent days have seen Rafa (see below) tell Spanish media that he is looking for an ambitious ‘Future Project’, making clear that could be at Newcastle United…or elsewhere.
Leicester City would be daft if they didn’t look to tempt Rafa Benitez and the big question is, what is Mike Ashley now going to do to deter him leaving this summer, whether it is to Leicester or elsewhere.
The Mag – Saturday 23 February 2019:
Rafa Benitez talking to Marca:
“The owner [Mike Ashley] knows it, me and my team are looking for a future project, competitive and ambitious.
“Let’s see [once Premier League safety is assured] if we are in the same line.
“I stayed in Newcastle and it was a high risk.
“We could not save them that first year but the next we went up.
“It is a top club and to stay was a sign that we are professional coaches.
“We [Rafa and his backroom team] are in it to win titles.
“The idea was to invest to enter the top 10 but the money [for improving the first team squad] did not reach the expected level.
“Now we are once again solving a problem of that lack of investment.
“Each owner manages his club as he wants.
“Newcastle has everything to be there, in the top eight, but it is not happening.
“I hope that it is done in the future.”
