Journalists vote Martin Dubravaka the North East Player of The Year
Newcastle goalkeeper Martin Dubravka has been named North East Football Writers’ Player of the Year for 2018.
The award announced on Sunday night.
Martin Dubravka has been first choice since he arrived, making his debut a year and a week ago, 11 February 2018 against Man Utd, he has been consistently excellent.
Taking games only in 2018, the keeper played 32 Premier League matches and conceded 38 goals, pretty phenomenal when playing for a team constantly battling relegation during that time.
In his entire time at Newcastle, Dubravka has now played 38 PL games and only conceded 45 goals in total.
Martin Dubravka speaking to Sky Sports:
“It is amazing.
“I couldn’t believe it.
“I got the message that I won this trophy and I couldn’t believe that, because I spent an amazing year here, but it is the first year, you know.
“It is an honour for me to be part of this great history and I know that fantastic players won this trophy before me, so I am very pleased with that.
“Yes, I have to say that [I feel at home in Newcastle].
“Everybody was very friendly to me here since I came and helped me in all cases.
“So every week, coming home from games, from travelling around, I feel like I deserve to be here.”
This is how the bottom six of the Premier League looks in terms of goals conceded this season (2018/19) so far:
27 points Burnley (47 goals conceded)
25 points Newcastle United (34 goals conceded)
25 points Cardiff (47 goals conceded)
24 points Southampton (44 goals conceded)
17 points Fulham (58 goals conceded)
11 points Huddersfield (48 goals conceded)
Only five clubs in the entire Premier League have conceded less goals than Newcastle/Martin Dubravka this season.
