Huddersfield manager’s feeble comments saying red card ‘Changed the situation’ as Newcastle dominate
Jan Siewert was grasping at very thin straws after Saturday’s match at St James Park.
Huddersfield were battered, Newcastle having 29 shots but somehow only scoring with two of them.
The visiting manager claimed ‘The red card broke our neck. Before that we had the possibility of possession and chances. It changed the situation of the game.’
The truth is though that in the 20 minutes before the Terriers’ captain Tommy Smith was sent off for a shocking tackle on Miguel Almiron, the Huddersfield goal had already led a charmed life.
Both Rondon and Almiron had hit the post and the visiting keeper had made three of four good saves.
In fact, the red card had one of those typical effects, where Newcastle actually found it more difficult to create chances, at least that is until after the break.
Jan Siewert speaking to Sky Sports:
“The red card broke our neck.
“Before that we had the possibility of possession and chances.
“It changed the situation of the game.
“I don’t want to complain about anything.
“I haven’t seen the red card again – I have to see it and then make my mind up.
“It was a diagonal ball [that led to opening goal] and it is very hard to defend a diagonal ball when you have one man less, because the opponent has more width.
“The ball landed in the box and they scored.
“It is not easy with one man less.
“We spoke about the game in the dressing room.
“We know the situation can change again and we will go on.
“One big result will make a big difference.
“The team has not won since November which is a really long period.”
