Alexi Lalas says a lot of people are counting on Miguel Almiron proving a success at Newcastle United

Alexi Lalas has been talking about Miguel Almiron’s transfer to Newcastle United.

Lalas has been an important figure in recent decades for football (soccer!) in America, first becoming recognised beyond the United States when having a very good World Cup in 1994, his distinctive long beard helping to mark him out.

There was even talk of him coming to the Premier League after that World Cup but instead he went and played for Padova in Italy for two years, before a long career in domestic football in the USA, playing for various clubs. As well as picking up 96 caps for his country.

His last one was Los Angeles Galaxy and later he would become President of LA Galaxy, Alexi Lalas in that role when David Beckham was signed.

Now he works as a commentator and pundit covering the MLS and he believes the Miguel Almiron transfer is a huge opportunity that has opened up for the MLS.

Alexi Lalas declaring: ‘He is not just going to represent himself, Atlanta and his country. He is going to represent MLS and it would be very good, in terms of this project to grow Major League Soccer, if this highest transfer in MLS history [was a success].’

He is also under no illusions as to how far the MLS has to go in getting wider recognition.

Lalas explaining: ‘The lack of knowledge when it came to who Miguel Almiron was…from the English media and folks over there, it is not surprising but it is a reality check.’

Nice to see as well though the fame that Mike Ashley’s running of Newcastle United has around the World, Aleix Lalas saying: ‘Also the highest transfer fee by a longshot when it comes to Newcastle United….The last one was Michael Owen, what…fifteen years ago, or something like that. Something ridiculous like that.’

That one word does sum up perfectly Ashley and is treatment of NUFC…’Ridiculous’

Whether this proves a fresh start for Miguel Almiron AND Newcastle United remains very much in the balance.

Alexi Lalas:

“We have Miguel Almiron, one of the best players, arguably the best player, in Major League Soccer. Being sold, it ends up being twenty seven million dollars or so, in terms of transfer fee.

“The new record when it comes to an MLS player.

“Obviously this is very big for the player.

“I think it is also very big for Major League Soccer.

“The lack of knowledge when it came to who Miguel Almiron was…from the English media and folks over there, it is not surprising but it is a reality check.

“He is not just going to represent himself, Atlanta and his country. He is going to represent MLS and it would be very good, in terms of this project to grow Major League Soccer, if this highest transfer in MLS history [was a success].

“[It is] Also the highest transfer fee by a longshot when it comes to Newcastle United, where he is going.

“The last one was Michael Owen, what…fifteen years ago, or something like that. Something ridiculous like that.

“So they [Newcastle] believe in this player.

“If he does well, it looks great for him and it looks great for Major League Soccer.”
