Alan Shearer wins North East Personality of The Year

Tuesday morning has brought news that Alan Shearer has been named North East Personality of The Year.

It is George Caulkin who has broken the news.

As well as covering the North East for The Times, George is also a patron on the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation and the award is given in association with the charity.

My first reaction was…isn’t Alan Shearer the North East Personality of The Year, every year???

However, on a serious note, great to see more recognition of everything that he has given back to the region where he was born and bred.

His contribution on the pitch for Newcastle United was phenomenal and since his playing retirement, what he has done for the City of Newcastle upon Tyne and the region in general has been just as impressive.

As George Caulkin points out, Alan Shearer raised £1.64m alone for good causes with his testimonial, then he has continued these next 13 years keeping on giving.

With his own Alan Shearer Foundation, the work he does with the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation, plus countless other good causes he actively supports.

George Caulkin:

“Very pleased that Alan Shearer is to be awarded the North East Personality of the Year trophy, given in association with the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation, at this Sunday’s North East Football Writers’ Association annual awards dinner.

“We are recognising Alan’s important contribution off the field, from his own Foundation, his work with many other charities and his recent documentary about football and dementia. Alan’s testimonial in 2006 raised £1.64m for good causes.”

Lady Elsie Robson:

“I didn’t hesitate for a moment when Alan was suggested for this award.

“Like my husband, he’s always understood that being a high-profile footballer brings great rewards but also great responsibilities and the chance to do something positive to help others…

”Especially in an area like the North East, which is so passionate about the game. Alan’s such an active supporter of local charities and absolutely deserves recognition for that.

“I’m very proud that he’s a Patron of our own Foundation and I know Bob would be, too.”

Previous winners of the NE Personality of the Year award, in association with the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation, have been Jermain Defoe, Steve Harper, Robbie Elliott and Niall Quinn.
