The ‘mystery striker’ Newcastle United trying to deal for today is Salomon Rondon to extend his stay – Telegraph
There were claims on Thursday morning that as well as the Miguel Almiron and Antonio Barreca deals, Newcastle were trying to do a deal for a ‘mystery striker’.
The Telegraph were carrying the claims and now their man covering Newcastle United, Luke Edwards, as revealed that the mystery number nine if Salomon Rondon.
Which indeed a far few Newcastle fans who were following the teasing comments/story had guessed.
The man from the Telegraph explaining it all below but the main thrust of the story is that Salomon Rondon could potentially agree a further year on loan covering next season, with the rumoured Jacob Murphy loan for the rest of this season being given the go ahead as part of any arrangement.
You would think/hope that any combination of Rondon, Murphy and Gayle could be used to find a deal suitable for both clubs.
Dwight Gayle has scored 14 goals already and is proving very popular at West Brom.
The same with Salomon Rondon who has six Premier League goals (seven in all competitions) for Newcastle.
In fact, in the 16 PL games Rondon has started, Newcastle have picked up 22 points, whilst in the other eight it has been only a total of two points.
His goal and overall performance against Man City a perfect example of what he has brought to Newcastle.
I suppose the big problem may be West Brom (though you could say the same about Newcastle…) not knowing which division they will be in next season, currently fourth in the Championship and so probably not wanting to agree at this moment a commitment to buy Dwight Gayle and guarantee his current PL level wages, just in case they don’t come up.
However, after this impending Almiron deal, securing Salomon Rondon long-term would surely be the next most popular deal Newcastle could do today within fan expectations/hopes under Mike Ashley.
“The mystery striker Newcastle United are trying to sign is in fact Salomon Rondon, who is already playing for the club, wearing the number nine shirt and doing rather well, it has to be said.
“But, please, stick with me.
“Newcastle are working on a deal with West Brom that would see the burly centre forward remain on Tyneside beyond the end of the season.
“The most likely scenario is they extend the 29-year-old loan for another year in return for Jacob Murphy heading to The Hawthorns this month.
“It all seems overly complicated to me, but West Brom would want around £15m to sell this month, yet Rondon will only have 12 months left on his contract when he is due to return to them in June.
“Importantly, he does not want to go back to the Midlands as he is thoroughly enjoying his time at Newcastle.
“Can Newcastle manage to get this convoluted negotiation done before tonight’s deadline?
“You wouldn’t re-mortgage you house to bet on it happening, but we shall see.”
