Sky Sports report on January spending over last 5 years by Premier League clubs – Newcastle United fans not surprised
A very interesting one from Sky Sports on Friday morning.
They have done a report on January transfer spending over the course of these past five seasons.
Taking the 20 current Premier League clubs, the broadcaster has produced a table of spending.
It shows how much has been spent in each season from 2013/14 to 2017/18 (inclusive) in each of the January window.
Then adding them together, shows who has spent the most and the least.
The Sky Sports table of January spending from 2013/14 to 2017/18:
As you can see, any of you who automatically expected Newcastle United to be bottom of the league in this table, have been left disappointed.
Newcastle actually mid-table in 11th.
However, that doesn’t tell anything like the whole story.
Apart from Man Utd (who have had massive spending in their summer windows in recent seasons), Newcastle United are the only club to have had their entire January spending in only one season.
In four of the five seasons, including the first two years of Rafa Benitez, Newcastle haven’t bought anybody.
It was only that 2015/16 season, where in January 2016 Mike Ashley handed Steve McClaren £30m worth of signings to try and avoid relegation, with Jonjo Shelvey, Andros Townsend and Henri Saivet all arriving.
If we are looking at a similar table in 12 months time then I think all of us are now pretty resigned to the fact that January 2019 will be yet another blank, with Mike Ashley set to block Rafa Benitez buying anybody for a third January in a row.
