Rafa Benitez to quit if he doesn’t get these two signings – Telegraph
An interesting exclusive on Tuesday regarding Rafa Benitez, Newcastle United transfers and the chances of him signing a contract extension.
It comes from The Telegraph and it paints a pretty bleak picture with the January transfer window closing a week on Thursday.
The report says that Rafa Benitez will definitely leave at the end of this season, unless he gets new players he made clear he needed ahead of this January window.
The NUFC manager is said to have given Mike Ashley a list of players and that he expected at least two of them to be signed for a couple of reasons.
Firstly, because the team is desperately in need of extra quality players to try and help ensure relegation is avoided.
Secondly, to show that Ashley is prepared to back Rafa Benitez longer-term, if he stays.
The Telegraph state that yet again Rafa made clear that he wanted these signings to be made at the very start of the transfer window, so they could have maximum impact on the relegation fight.
The report adding that their information is that the manager is understandably very angry that this hasn’t happened and that he is at ‘breaking point’ due to the inaction.
This is now the fifth transfer window in a row where Mike Ashley has undermined the manager and even before then, the one window where Rafa Benitez was given reasonable backing as he needed to build an entire new team for the Championship promotion season, Ashley still made a £40m profit on deals.
The newspaper reports that Rafa Benitez had his hopes raised that there would be at last a breakthrough early this week, only for ‘tension behind the scenes’ to rise as it became apparent this wasn’t happening.
The Newcastle manager is understandably frustrated that he is still relying on Championship players almost entirely, the starting 11 against Man Utd three weeks ago had eight players who were with Newcastle in the Championship, whilst on Saturday against Cardiff, 12 of the 18 man matchday squad were playing in the Championship that 2017/18 season.
With talk now increasingly turning to loans, if anything, before the deadline, The Telegraph say Rafa Benitez is becoming increasingly ‘confused’ as to why no money is being made available, especially with NUFC banking another £55m this month as part of their Premier League/TV cash for this season.
This has obviously been coming for some time now and Rafa Benitez has said throughout these past six months that any decision on a potential contract extension, wouldn’t happen until after he had seen what would happen in this transfer window.
Newcastle fans will surely now accept that the chances of Rafa Benitez staying and extending his Newcastle contract, are about as likely as Mike Ashley allowing the club’s 14 year transfer record to be broken.
The hot favourite is surely not even one buy this month, maybe an odd loan at best, then Rafa Benitez left with no alternative but to walk away in the summer.
Only at Newcastle United under Mike Ashley.
