Photos – Antonio Barreca at training ground on Thursday morning to finalise move to Newcastle United
With Miguel Almiron set to be announced imminently, Antonio Barreca looks to be the only other player set to be definitely signing for Newcastle in January.
Less than 13 hours to go until the window closes, the Italian Under 21 international will sign on loan initially.
Yesterday, Italian journalist Gianluca Di Mmarzio reported that Newcastle United have agreed to pay a 1m euros (£870,000) loan fee to Monaco to cover the rest of the season. Plus a buyout figure of 9m euros (£7.85m) has also been agreed, if everything works out.
The versatile player can play anywhere down the left side but wing-back is said to be his best/preferred position. Which obviously fits with Rafa Benitez now repeatedly using three/five at the back.
Antonio Barreca took the first part of his medical on Wednesday and has now been pictured (see below) at Newcastle’s training ground, ahead of taking the second and final part of his medical, before then his signing can be announced.

Matt Ritchie did a great job on Tuesday at left wing-back against Manchester City and has generally done ok, his workrate phenomenal. However, he clearly doesn’t enjoy it back there and especially against the ‘lesser’ teams in the Premier League, Newcastle would definitely benefit from him playing further up the pitch and a specialist wing-back such as Antonio Barreca playing there instead.
Whilst he hasn’t even being named in a Ligue 1 matchday squad since 3 November after being frozen out by Thierry Henry, Antonio Barreca should be match fit.
In January the left sided player has played in the cup for the first team and three times turned out for the Monaco reserve team, the last of those only eight days ago.
For Spurs away on Saturday, Matt Ritchie will surely continue to play in a five man defence and I think Wolves away in 11 days time will be the same, maybe Barreca getting some minutes off the bench depending on how things are going.
The next game after that is Huddersfield at home on Saturday 23 February and that will very likely be the game Rafa Benitez is targeting for Antonio Barreca to start, with three weeks of training and settling in behind him, very possibly/probably the same with Almiron.
Paul Dummett hasn’t played since 2 January and having had a visit to a specialist in Barcelona to try and sort out recurring hamstring problems, it remains to be seen when he next will be available.
The Mag – Wednesday 30 January 2019:
Antonio Barreca will sign for Newcastle United later today, reports Gianluca Di Marzio.
The Italian journalist has been first with news of a number of Newcastle’s signings in recent years.
Indeed it was he who broke the Jordan Lukaku story, only for Newcastle to pull out of the deal for an unspecified reason after the player had travelled to Tyneside.
English media suggesting a problem with the medical, whilst Sky Italia said it was Newcastle not prepared to cover all the player’s wages whilst on loan.
Di Marzio has now said that Antonio Barreca will have his medical today, meet his new teammates, and sign a deal (providing no medical problems…).
The 23 year old left-sided Italian wing-back moved to Monaco in the summer from Torino but after seven Ligue 1 starts early on, ended up frozen out of the first team picture altogether by the now sacked Thierry Henry.
Di Marzio says that Newcastle United have agreed to pay a 1m euros (£870,000) loan fee to Monaco to cover the rest of the season.
Plus a buyout figure of 9m euros (£7.85m) has also been agreed, if everything works out.
Miguel Almiron is also expected on Tyneside today as he is set to arrive in a reported £20m deal.
“Antonio Barreca is starting an adventure at Newcastle.
“The player, transferred from Monaco, will meet up with Benitez’s squad this (Wednesday) morning.
“He will undergo his medical and sign his contract.
“The formula of the move is a loan (1 million euros) with a buyout clause fixed at 9 million euros.
“After Serie A and Ligue 1, Barreca is ready for an adventure in the Premier League.”
