Newcastle United 0 Manchester United 2  – Wednesday 2 January 8pm

We asked a number of our regular writers to give us a brief instant reaction after the final whistle.

Newcastle battling away but undone with two second-half goals.

A rare mistake from Martin Dubravka gifting the vital opening goal.

Brian Standen:

“Hard living with a Man Utd fan – typical glory hunter.

“Matched them for whole game, one mistake by Dubravka cost, but he owes us nothing!

“Wind back and it was soft free kick in first place!

“Chasing the game, they were always likely to get a second, but no disgrace.

“A word about Pogba, £300k per week and could not break sweat for Jose, suddenly the world’s best!

“A disgrace to all true football fans.”

Nat Seaton:

“Disappointing result.

“Wasn’t too hopeful of picking up any points before the game but at half time I was a bit more hopeful.

“Turned out to be yet another home defeat to a team who were not that impressive.

“There was nothing on show to give me any hope for the next few games…”

David Punton:

“The players gave it a go but they’ve come up short against a club with a galaxy of talent freed from the Mourinho shackles.

“It’s a result that leaves Newcastle United perilously close to the drop zone and facing a tough run of games. Felt for Dubravka tonight on that first goal.

“These feel like toxic times.

“The regime running NUFC is strangling the life out of a club that is in desperate need of fresh investment and new ownership.

“Once again we’re left wondering where the money has gone and why so many apparent lies and half truths swirl around this shambles of a set up that Benitez is trying desperately to hold to together.

“Pains me to say it but we’re in deep trouble.”

Jonathan Drape-Comyn:

“Result was a fair reflection of the game.

“In truth, Newcastle were never in the game and from the onset there was only going to be one winner.

“Atsu was a threat at times but when you line up with a flat back 5, marshalled with Diame and Hayden in front of it, then you aren’t giving yourself much of a chance.

“It took until the 80th minute to make a meaningful substitution, by this point we were 2-0 down and the game was over.

“Not going to criticise Dubravka for his error that led to opening goal. He has kept us in many a game since signing for the club. You could say he has earned that mistake.

PS When was the last time you saw a centre half take the kick off (Schar start of second half)?

George Stainsby:

“We looked like there were more options with Shelvey, but… Atsu couldn’t supply the final ball and we didn’t get those lucky bounces you sometimes need.

“First goal was unlucky, how any times has Dubravka kept us in it? Harsh for him.

“There are worse teams but we’d better get spending the Christmas money.”

Paul Patterson:

“12 months of Sanchez’ wages would pay our striker’s loan fee and cover our number 10’s transfer fee.

“Different worlds.”

Jack Lacey-Hatton:

“That was absolutely awful for me.

“Very little hope on offer.

“We didn’t really make it that close.

“With injuries and international call ups looming, it looks like we are in for a rough few weeks.

“Happy new year indeed.

“At least we have the FA Cup (for now).”
