Garth Crooks explains why this Newcastle United star has made his Premier League team of the week
Garth Crooks has chosen his Premier League team of the week.
Talking to BBC Sport, he has included one Newcastle star in his eleven choices after the 3-0 win at Cardiff.
Garth Crooks says that Fabian Schar had a ‘magnificent game’ and harks back to the days of Philippe Albert…
The BBC Sport pundit though adding that the Swiss international might not be quite in Albert’s class.
However, it is 23 years since a defender last scored twice in a Premier League match for Newcastle United.
Garth Crooks referring back to a quite mad game in February 1996, Philippe Albert scored twice, whilst Tino Asprilla scored the other and nutted Keith Curle as well. That 3-3 draw at Man City was a classic as Newcastle were going for the title, Keegan’s team going behind three times.
Of course, Fabian Schar has scored his two goals in a very different context, in the space of 40 minutes on Saturday, Schar became Newcastle’s joint fourth top Premier League scorer this season…
Personally, whilst he didn’t score, I thought Salomon Rondon was immense on Saturday and should have probably made anybody’s Premier League team of the week.
Garth Crooks summing up perfectly, exactly where Newcastle United are at this moment in time: ‘Can Newcastle survive this season? Yes, but not without Rafa Benitez.’
Garth Crooks speaking to BBC Sport, explains why he has picked the two Newcastle players and following that is listed is complete team of the week:
On Fabian Schar:
“I have to go back to the days of Philippe Albert for a performance like this from a Newcastle defender.
“I’m not saying he’s in that class but Fabian Schar did have a magnificent game.
“The Swiss international scored one of the best individual goals I’ve seen from a central defender in years, along with a match-winning intervention if ever I saw one.
“Can Newcastle survive this season? Yes, but not without Rafa Benitez.
“Did you know?
