Transfer Rumours

French media claim Newcastle United set to loan Nantes record signing today

Newcastle United were regularly linked with Anthony Limbombe throughout last summer.

The (now) 24 year old attacking midfielder/winger set to leave Brugge, with the Premier League the most likely destination.

The media in Belgium were insistent that a move to England was on the cards and even claimed a £13m bid had been made by Huddersfield (see below), only for Anthony Limbombe to instead move to Ligue 1.

The player became Nantes most expensive ever signing but at a more modest £7m than the figures being talked about in Belgium.

As with all transfer stories, seeing is believing, and who knows whether there was genuine interest from Newcastle/Premier League clubs in the player, or whether it was simply Brugge trying to pitch Anthony Limbombe to clubs over the channel, knowing that would drive the price higher.

Recent days have seen the player once again linked with Newcastle United, with only six Ligue 1 starts (plus 10 off the bench) and no goals, Nantes are widely reported to be happy for the player to move out after only five months.

Despite not moving until late August, Brugge didn’t play Anthony Limbombe in any of their games, despite the league season in Belgium starting in July. So that means he is allowed to move on today and play for another club, rather than being blocked by the playing for maximum of two clubs in a season rule.

Late on Wednesday night, over in France, 20 minutes reported that their information was that Anthony Limbombe will now eventually sign for Newcastle today (Thursday), with a move initially on loan being the most likely.

However, after flopping following a £7m summer move, any transfer fee would surely be lower than that and within Newcastle’s/Ashley’s reach.

The manager Vahid Halilhodzic is said to be happy for Limbombe to move on, selecting the player for only one league start in the last 10 weeks tells its own story.

The Mag – 31 July 2018:

Anthony Limbombe is a target for Newcastle once again, according to reports on Tuesday morning.

The Belgian international winger was first linked with Newcastle back in June (see below), it was claimed back then that a host of clubs were after him and that supposedly Huddersfield had offered £13m – but Club Brugge and the player were waiting to see what Newcastle and other clubs would do, before making a decision.

The latest claims from Belgium see HLN report that Newcastle United and other clubs are now bidding to buy the 24 year old.

It is further claimed in the media that Rafa Benitez is happy to sell Christian Atsu to then help pay, and make space for, Anthony Limbombe.

The season in Belgium has already kicked off, with Club Brugge beating Standard Liege 2-1 in the Super Cup on Sunday 22 July, then this last Sunday (29 July) they beat AS Eupen 5-2 in the opening league match.

Anthony Limbombe was left out of both matchday squads, appearing to indicate that Club Brugge are intending to sell and the player will leave for a new club, whether that is Newcastle United remains to be seen.

Nine days until transfer deadline day

The Mag – 19 June 2018:

Newcastle United have registered their interest with Club Brugge and are set to come in with their bid for Anthony Limbombe this week, according to HLN in Belgium.

The winger who can also play as a striker, was born in Belgium and played his early football there.

However, he joined NEC in the Dutch second tier in 2014 as a 20 year old and scored 14 times as he helped them to promotion, the following season scoring seven times in the Dutch top division.

That brought a £2m return to Belgium with Club Brugge signing him two years ago, the first season a disappointment with only 12 league starts and no goals.

However, this past season saw Anthony Limbombe become a regular and he scored six goals, making 29 league starts and another three off the bench.

The winger helped Club Brugge win the regular season easily, then also emerge victorious from the Championship play-offs, which means they go straight into the Champions League group stages.

Despite the Champions League football and cash, club and player are set to part company.

HLN says that whilst there was initial interest from French and German clubs, it is now English clubs who dominate the chase.

They state that Huddersfield have already bid £13m which is the original price Club Brugge were looking for.

However, with both Newcastle and Southampton having already approached the Belgian club, the player’s agents have been led to expect bids from these two by the end of the week, so will wait to see who comes up with the best offer for their player.

A lot of links appearing with regard to Newcastle and players in Belgium, so this is another for the list.

Anthony Limbombe made his first appearance for the Belgium national senior side in March but wasn’t selected for the World Cup squad, so if any transfer is in the offing for any club the World Cup won’t delay it.
