Chelsea 2 Newcastle 1 – Instant NUFC fan/writer reaction

Chelsea 2 Newcastle 1  – Saturday 12 January 5.30pm

We asked a number of our regular writers to give us a brief instant reaction after the final whistle.

Newcastle going a goal down to a bit of a soft one.

Then more than holding their own in the rest of the game.

Ciaran Clark with an excellent header to equalise, only for Willian to score a superb winner with a bit of help from Newcastle players standing off him.

Brian Standen:

“Really good performance to be fair, not helped by some poor refereeing!

“Young Longstaff certainly looks the part and with a few games will only get better.

“Bad defending for first goal however, as Clark was at fault.

“However, he did redeem himself with a fine header.

“Hopefully can take a lot of heart from such an encouraging performance as definitely need a win next weekend.

“Slightly unlucky today!”

Nat Seaton:

“When you look at the team sheet you think how many are we going to lose by…

“Did better than I thought we might but doesn’t change the fact that we lost with a team / squad that simply is not looking good enough to stay in the Premier League.”

David Punton:

“Never expected to win this game.

“At 1-1 it was the good old hope killer as Willian edged them back in front. Results elsewhere leave us now back in the bottom three. Perilous.

“The architect of this mess – Mike Ashley – was there to witness it. Doubtless he smirked his way through it before sauntering off for a curry, not in the least bit bothered about the situation.

“Meanwhile in the BT studio Rio Ferdinand was praising Ashley. This clown, who I used to have a bit of respect for, was peddling the lies thick and fast.

“We will go on from this game and the challenge is to get out of that bottom three and stay out, but it won’t be easy with this squad and no signings in the winter window.

“Must also say well done to Sean Longstaff, the lad didn’t let anyone down today amid a midfield crisis which is another massive balls up by the club.

“Regardless of what the pundits and fans of other clubs say, everything that is wrong at Newcastle United is down to strategic failures which are the realm of Mr Ashley and his goons.”

Jonathan Drape-Comyn:

“Couldn’t ask for more from those on the pitch.

“Massive shout to Sean Longstaff who held his own against the best.”

Ben Cooper:

“United played well today.

“Every player worked hard and most played as well as they can.

“The only difference between the teams was that the Chelsea players cost 10 times more.

“We may be in the bottom 3 now but I was encouraged by that performance.

“Play like that for the rest of the season and NUFC will be 6th bottom come May.”

Jamie Smith:

“Not unexpected but the inevitable slip into the bottom 3 is bad news.

“Still got Spurs and City to negotiate before things settle. If we don’t do Cardiff it’s disaster stations.

“Rio Ferdinand has actually done us a favour as he’s exposed what utter sh… the Ashley narrative is as the fat one plans another relegation.”

Paul Patterson:

“A manful, gallant display.

“But against those players? No chance!

“Let’s not overlook today’s disgrace from Rio Ferdinand pre match though. A charlatan…”

Toon Bano:

“Not the worst performance I’ve seen at Stamford Bridge but what is clear is that the lack of quality in the team will see us relegated.

“This football club needs to bring in players if Mike Ashley wishes to actually save HIMSELF money as needs to pump more loans into it if it goes down.

“The only time Mike Ashley uses his own funds is when we go down. When we are in the Prem it uses its own money.

“So why the hell would you not make sure it stays there?

“People still believe Mr Ashley is a wise man purely based on his bank balance.

“The man may know how to take advantage of struggling companies and know how to take advantage of desperate staff, but that’s all he knows.

“He is not fit to run a football club. Any football club. His local grassroots team would fold in 2 months if he took over.

“Sell up and p… off for good.

“As for Rio Ferdinand. Laughable.”
