Chelsea 2 Newcastle 1  – Saturday 12 January 5.30pm

We asked a number of our regular writers to give us a brief instant reaction after the final whistle.

Newcastle going a goal down to a bit of a soft one.

Then more than holding their own in the rest of the game.

Ciaran Clark with an excellent header to equalise, only for Willian to score a superb winner with a bit of help from Newcastle players standing off him.

Brian Standen:

“Really good performance to be fair, not helped by some poor refereeing!

“Young Longstaff certainly looks the part and with a few games will only get better.

“Bad defending for first goal however, as Clark was at fault.

“However, he did redeem himself with a fine header.

“Hopefully can take a lot of heart from such an encouraging performance as definitely need a win next weekend.

“Slightly unlucky today!”

Nat Seaton:

“When you look at the team sheet you think how many are we going to lose by…

“Did better than I thought we might but doesn’t change the fact that we lost with a team / squad that simply is not looking good enough to stay in the Premier League.”

David Punton:

“Never expected to win this game.

“At 1-1 it was the good old hope killer as Willian edged them back in front. Results elsewhere leave us now back in the bottom three. Perilous.

“The architect of this mess – Mike Ashley – was there to witness it. Doubtless he smirked his way through it before sauntering off for a curry, not in the least bit bothered about the situation.

“Meanwhile in the BT studio Rio Ferdinand was praising Ashley. This clown, who I used to have a bit of respect for, was peddling the lies thick and fast.

“We will go on from this game and the challenge is to get out of that bottom three and stay out, but it won’t be easy with this squad and no signings in the winter window.

“Must also say well done to Sean Longstaff, the lad didn’t let anyone down today amid a midfield crisis which is another massive balls up by the club.

“Regardless of what the pundits and fans of other clubs say, everything that is wrong at Newcastle United is down to strategic failures which are the realm of Mr Ashley and his goons.”

Jonathan Drape-Comyn:

“Couldn’t ask for more from those on the pitch.

“Massive shout to Sean Longstaff who held his own against the best.”

Ben Cooper:

“United played well today.

“Every player worked hard and most played as well as they can.

“The only difference between the teams was that the Chelsea players cost 10 times more.

“We may be in the bottom 3 now but I was encouraged by that performance.

“Play like that for the rest of the season and NUFC will be 6th bottom come May.”

Jamie Smith:

“Not unexpected but the inevitable slip into the bottom 3 is bad news.

“Still got Spurs and City to negotiate before things settle. If we don’t do Cardiff it’s disaster stations.

“Rio Ferdinand has actually done us a favour as he’s exposed what utter sh… the Ashley narrative is as the fat one plans another relegation.”

Paul Patterson:

“A manful, gallant display.

“But against those players? No chance!

“Let’s not overlook today’s disgrace from Rio Ferdinand pre match though. A charlatan…”

Toon Bano:

“Not the worst performance I’ve seen at Stamford Bridge but what is clear is that the lack of quality in the team will see us relegated.

“This football club needs to bring in players if Mike Ashley wishes to actually save HIMSELF money as needs to pump more loans into it if it goes down.

“The only time Mike Ashley uses his own funds is when we go down. When we are in the Prem it uses its own money.

“So why the hell would you not make sure it stays there?

“People still believe Mr Ashley is a wise man purely based on his bank balance.

“The man may know how to take advantage of struggling companies and know how to take advantage of desperate staff, but that’s all he knows.

“He is not fit to run a football club. Any football club. His local grassroots team would fold in 2 months if he took over.

“Sell up and p… off for good.

“As for Rio Ferdinand. Laughable.”

Things could get worse shelvey odds on with bookies to be a West Ham player by the end of the window. Knocking bet it will be in the last couple of hours and we won’t have time to get a replacement over the line 😝😬😔😠😠

    • Kenny

      Helicopter on standby

      • KRS1

Anyone got a surface to air missile

        • Spider

No. but I’ve fired a few in my time back in the old days.

    • Billmag

Relax they won’t buy an injured player.

    • South toon

It’s Ashley selling!!…..he’ll have to catch the train

  • toonterrier

A better performance than we expected which hopefully will give the players a bit of a lift but no points and we’re now in the bottom three so its obvious we need to boost the squad but it probably wont happen. We have to try and stay positive but we could well be doomed in the next few weeks but under the fat one we know he wont spend money and will keep on lying and bleeding the club until someone with ambition hands over the money to get the fat rat out.

    • Kenny

Touch of genius taking a short corner in the dying seconds with Chelsea`s box full of Newcastle players.

      • Billmag

        I despair I really do.

      • South toon

I nearly had to dig my phone out the wall when I saw that!
Especially after that’s where our 1st goal came from!
        The mind [email protected]#%ing boggles!??

      • 5floorshigh

it is up there with some of the dumbest things I have seen on a football pitch

      • Kneebotherm8

My thoughts exactly…..20 seconds to go and they did that……..should be shot with sht for that brainless decision….

      • fistsofsteel2

        Exactly! Just stupid and unbelievable.
I bet there were a fair few of us screaming in frustration when the idiots did that.

  • Kenny

Some players don`t seem to care and a lot of players are just not up to the job,
in this league sweat and effort can`t compensate for class, they had it we didn`t.
    it`s all down to Ashley.

    • Kneebotherm8

They had sweat ,effort and class………….we had 2 out of those 3 attributes…

  • GlasgowMag

Ferdinand is a disgrace!! Look what happened with Leeds, Mike is a business man and that old chestnut he is trying his best to sell the club basically [email protected]!! Boys did a good job today just the lack of end product was our downfall again due to yes Mr Ferdinand basic lack of investment by our workhouse owner. Rafa in my opinion just like at the start of the season was expecting to be in the bottom 3 during our unprecedented period playing all the top six back to back. Once we are over this period he will have enough know how to scrape us to safety so he can leave with his head held high then god help us all!!!

    • Billmag

I blame the people that are asking the question’s, they never put the question everyone on this message board asks, where’s the money gone, two relegation’s under his tenure and could be a third, couple of near misses, lies every season that he’s selling the club, do you still think he’s doing a good job Ferdinand.

      • KRS1

Totally agree. Somehow he manages to manipulate Sky, BT, Talksport the Chronicle – he is a proven liar and is treating a world class manager with contempt – how thefuck does he get away with it

      • GlasgowMag

It is open season for any journalist who would actually spend sometime looking into Cashleys activity at our club but sadly nobody seems to be be interested!! The Chron is a joke we would be better employing Panorama to get the job done!!

    • KRS1

Rio is an absolute tool, like so many in the media. Joe Cole is a moron who just utters standards footballers platitudes. Well done to Jake Humphrey trying to provide some facts.

      • Billmag

Cole was like one of them nodding dogs that you see in the back window of a car. Thick as mince Cole.

        • Toontaff

          I had one of them…a Churchill…oh, yes!

  • Mark

FCB deserves the toon to get relegated and I would laugh my moobs off if he ended up getting a £1 for the club like the SMB Ellis short if we went down again. We would always come back without him look at Rangers. This d**k does not deserve another penny out this club.

  • Tommy

The Old Bill should caution Perez for impersonating a football player.

  • JohnnyH

Narrow margin defeat by a top team again.

Makes you wonder what might have been if Rafa had been backed for the last three years.

  • molend

At the minute it looks like either us or Cardiff.

  • South toon

All things considered ,the lads did good today!
Apart from that last corner, after scoring from a corner, why go short!?😤
A bit more fire power and Chelsea were there for the taking.
We are going nowhere with him running our club, fed up of moaning or wasting time on him, I’m just waiting for the news to come in that he’s sold Newcastle, weather it be this season or not…until then just support the lads!

  • Superdooperhooper

The acceptance of mediocrity is all I can see from those comments

    • Coach Clagnut

    • Toontaff

We could end up 6th bottom, though………….yey!

  • Cockneytrev

Looking at that squad in comparison to the Chelsea squad and once again Rafa has got far more out of them than he could be expected too,,
As for Ferdinand, to think he is related to Les, it’s hard to believe that two such different characters could come from the same gene pool, one has integrity, the other is self serving scum,,

  • fistsofsteel2

To be fair that was one of our best performances this season – especially when you compare the paucity of our squad with Chelseas.
The only obvious criticism is that if Ashley had supplied the readies to purchase 2 or 3 quality players £20miilion – £40million we might have well won today. Alas Ashley doesn’t have a clue about how to speculate to accumulate in football – the silly beer guzzling chancer.

  • fistsofsteel2

Thought Perez done well – was disappointed to see him subbed.

    • love toon despite

Wow, Perez done well??? hmm not sure I watched the same game then…

  • Toontaff

Da, da, da, da, da, da ……..Rio…………..maybe you can ask your pal Mike why he has made ‘a yo-yo club’ out of a top 6 club?
Brian Standen – The ref was not the reason we lost!
