Blackburn 2 Newcastle 4 – Instant NUFC fan/writer reaction

Blackburn 2 Newcastle 4  – Tuesday 15 January 7.45pm

We asked a number of our regular writers to give us a brief instant reaction after the final whistle.

Newcastle ‘surging’ through to the fourth round of the FA Cup.

Here’s hoping this gives a little bit of confidence and  momentum for Saturday against Cardiff.

Jack Lacey-Hatton:

“I don’t care that it took two games, 215 odd minutes and five goals.

“We got through an FA Cup tie!

“The players deserved that, the fans deserved it and certainly Rafa did after how hellish January has been to him.

“Extra credit to Longstaff and Roberts to come in and actually contribute. They deserve more chances in the future.

“Whatever happens in the next round I still think that was worth it.

“A great cup night for us- we don’t get many.”

Nat Seaton:

“A cup win and 4 goals!!!

“Thought we’d blown it, but against pretty poor opposition we stuck with it and got the win.

“Travelling home happy for a change…”

David Punton:

“An historic day.

“Not the Brexit vote, but Newcastle United managing to get through to the fourth round of the FA Cup, who would have thought it?

“It’s been a bleak few weeks at our club, mired in politics and misinformation, so a win tonight was much needed and will hopefully lift the spirits.

“This was a game nobody really wanted, so it was typical Newcastle to win it, and do so after squandering a 2-0 lead following a blistering start to the game.

“The bairns, Longstaff and Roberts, got us up and running. Longstaff once again showing he could make it here as a first team player. The lad can shoot.

“At 2-2 you feared the worst but then came the madness. Joselu. Yes, you are reading it right, Joselu, of all people, puts us ahead in extra time.

“Then Ayoze Perez rattles in a delicious fourth goal. If only he could do that more often.

“The quality of tonight’s opponent was pretty low – don’t forget Blackburn were League 1 last season – but we’ve got through against a team I’ve always seen as a bit of bogey side.

“We even managed it despite our former hope, Adam Armstrong, notching with a very good finish.

“We now look forward to a much harder test in round four against Watford at St James Park.

“And we have to hope tonight’s exertions haven’t done too much harm on the injury front.”

Brian Standen:

“Hit and miss performance, loads of promise but only in small patches.

“2-0 up we should be out of sight, yet we concede daft goals!

“Credit to Adam Armstrong for not celebrating, he played well.

“Jacob Murphy, an enigma, he has so much to offer and made a goal, but come on… CAN son!

“Perez? Great goal – he has so much too.

“Ok. Saturday is huge.

“Come on.”

Kevin Christie:

“A win is a win but the teamsheet and result this Saturday will show just how much of a pyrrhic victory this turns out to be. Lascelles and Clark likely to be out, Hayden and Schär both surely a doubt.

“Disappointing to blow a two goal lead but we didn’t really deserve it in the first place and we battled hard to stay in the game and ultimately seal the win on a tricky night.

“It may have been in 120 minutes and against lower league opposition but scoring four goals can only ever be a good thing – will hopefully give us a bit of confidence going into the Cardiff game.

“I thought Schär’s range of passing was great tonight and Longstaff did well again.

“Nice to see four academy graduates in the starting XI and Roberts took his goal really well.

“Despite the logical arguments in favour of going out early, it’s nice to still be in the cup and to have a relatively kind fixture in the next round.

“Here’s hoping that we can build on this win and pick up a massive three points against Cardiff at the weekend!”

Paul Patterson:

“Pleased for the young lads, but that game might cost us against Cardiff…”

Toon Bano:

“It’s a strange time when you don’t really care if you get through the cup or not.

“I don’t think Rafa even wanted to get through tbh.

“We shall take a victory and move on.

“If we have any fit players left…”

Jamie Smith:

“I’m pleased we got through as the collateral damage taken to still exit in the third round would have been hard to take.

“Hopefully the win and the goals will give whatever passes for our team on Saturday the confidence to keep the extra time standard going in a huge game v Cardiff.

“Jacob Murphy had a canny game tonight, and brilliant for the young lads to get goals, will do them the world of good.”

Davey Hat-Trick:

“Enjoyed that, and it looked like the players did too.

“Understandably, looking like there was less pressure on them than in recent league games.

“More positives than negatives, and most of the negatives were injuries. Saturday’s team will pick itself.

“Pleased for Longstaff and Roberts – this can only add to their confidence – and a pat on the back for Joselu. He gets more stick than anyone, (I give him a fair amount!) but he did well tonight.”
