Alan Shearer was working at St James Park on Wednesday night.

The Newcastle United legend forced to sit through a performance by NUFC that was full of effort but had an almost total lack of quality.

As for signings he declared that Rafa Benitez ‘is working on an unbelievable budget’ as the January transfer window is upon us and he didn’t mean ‘unbelievable’ in a good way.

He says he would be surprised if Mike Ashley allows Newcastle to do anything of consequence this month and believes that Rafa Benitez thinks the same.

Alan Shearer was also at Anfield to watch Newcastle on Boxing Day and draws comparisons with another era.

He points to £6m Joselu playing up front for Newcastle and the likes of £5m midfielders Hayden and Diame, comparing that to ’20 years ago’ when Newcastle had £6m Les Ferdinand and £5m David Batty.

It is of course even worse than that because it is now actually 24 years since Les Ferdinand signed for Newcastle and 23 years since David Batty arrived, plus the legendary number nine fails to mention a certain £15m striker who arrived 23 years ago at St James Park.

Against Manchester United tonight of course, the two most attacking player were actually a loan (Rondon) and a £1.8m signing in Perez.

Alan Shearer declaring, Rafa Benitez doesn’t expect £300m or £400m ‘he just wants to be given a chance.’

Alan Shearer talking after Newcastle United 0 Manchester United 2 on BBC Radio 5 Live:

Steve Crossman:

“Is there any point talking about the January transfer window with Newcastle United, do you think they will do anything?”

Alan Shearer:

“No I don’t, I’d be surprised if they did, and probably Rafa Benitez would be the same.

“I think he is fed up, frustrated, feels like his hands are tied behind his back at times, because he is working on an unbelievable budget here.

“To get Newcastle to 10th last season, and if they survive again, it will be a very very good season, and that is the sad thing about it…

“He just wants to be given a chance.

“I don’t think he wants £300m or £400m, he wants a chance to compete, to try and get Newcastle in the top half of the table and try to have a good cup run.

“I was at Anfield on Boxing Day and looked at our team then, 20 years ago Newcastle had those classic games against Liverpool, the 4-3 games which everyone talks about. I looked at the midfield and I looked at the forwards then.

“Newcastle then had a £5m player, they bought David Batty for around about £5m, their midfielders on Boxing Day were Hayden and Diame who both cost around £5m.

“I looked at the centre-forward they had that day and 20 years ago they paid around £6m for Les Ferdinand – they had a £6m forward on Boxing Day in Joselu.

“So that tells you exactly where Newcastle are.”

I’m drained now with the club.. Freezing cold poir lacklustre rubbish as usual. . Man u fans you never heard until they scored and a bloke in the labour club with a shaka hislop top on.. 😕

My biggest disappointment of the night was the pathetic flag in the Gallowgate end. Did it show the growing disillusionment with Ashley’s lies and deceit? No it claimed “there’s only one utd”… here was a massive opportunity wasted when a message could’ve been plastered on tv screens around the globe!!!

    • Tweed Mag

You are right, but there is a chance Sky would not have shown an anti-ashley flag. They do his bidding – pet poodles.

      • porciestreet

Im sure that is a definate…!

        • Steven05

I agree – but as a fan group, we should be doing what we claim we demand from our club, and that is to ‘at least try’

          • porciestreet

Youre preaching to the converted Steve.
I cant do much about it from where I live other than bleed on my keyboard.

  • Tweed Mag

January 2019 could well be the month that represents the worst of the oaf’s ownership. No funds for transfers, a weakened team that was already weak, the prospect of losing the best manager since SBR almost inevitable and the fans insulted daily with one stupid spin story after another.
Ashley’s arrogance will eventually bring him down, but unfortunately it will be too late for the club.
Rafa has asked for a miracle, but there is no one listening – the oaf and his hooplettes are clueless and incapable of building on Rafa’s knowledge and experience.

    • Mr_Kinnear

Its Ok a sale is imminent. Ashley said so. Surely he would not lie 😂😂😂😂. Back on the bottom 3 soon

  • Toonarden

Down with the Christmas decorations. That’s this team.
Only one person to blame but do the fans do anything about it except moan?
If Rafa slings his hook and we are relegated once again Toon fans should vote next season with their feet. In their thousands.
Will they? Of course not. But let’s not worry about the fact that we are still going to watch this sh*t for ever as long as we can have a pint with our mates eh?
Newcastle supporters get everything they deserve.

  • Mrkgw

Mike Ashley disgusts us all. We need him out of our club. ASAP.

    • porciestreet

Easier said than done my friend. Total blockade would be a good start.

      • porciestreet

        Failing that, shoot the ba5tad.

        • Leicester Mag

Just don’t hire one of our forwards

  • 1ewis

Fact is that we don’t belong in the Premier League. It’s a slow death, painful to watch.

Could be a Leeds. A long time in the championship mid table wilderness

At the moment, were a ship without a Captain .Just drifting on the tide.

        • 1ewis

We have a good captain but every year the ship deteriorates and now the ship is sinking

    • porciestreet

The club does:…..but this team doesnt even belong in the Championship.
      FATBASTADOOT
      HWTL.

      • Steven05

I nearly wrote that the club does, but stopped myself:

What is the club – the person who owns it?

        The person/people ‘running’ it?

Or the thousands of fans who are refusing to act/make a stand, and fight for it?

        • porciestreet

Steven, from my point, the club is what I fell in love with in 1957.
The chairmen I grew up with like McKeag and the pirate Westwood were the beginning of the rot for me and its gone steadily down the pan since.

          • Steven05

I understand what you are saying. It’s just I can’t help but think we as a fan group could do more, do something, anything – to at least not make it not so easy for one man to neglect this club that is so important to so many people, past and present.

  • Geordiegiants

Howare then Alan do something to help us!

  • Wor Lass

I`m actually sick of reading these articles now. If we do nothing again in this window people have to do more than moaning. Do something to show everyone (and most importantly Ashley) that you`ve had enough – stop going to the games!

    • nufcslf

It is the only way, but even only 8 points at home this season and the sheep carry on turning up. F**king increadible comes to mind. Get what you deserve in the end.

      • Wor Lass

In fact, waiting to see whether or not anything happens in this window would be leaving it too late.

        • nufcslf

Really is sickening. The FA Cup this weekend against Blackburn just becomes a bigger joke with what is already a rotten first team likely having to be rested for the away trip to Chelsea. All a bit of a lost cause. Cashley should be shot for taking the pysh for so long that it has got this bad. Going to watch the Blackburn match here in Vancouver on a pay channel that I refuse to order with my brother being over on holiday at mates house and simply dreading it. Can’t see anything other than another early exit. We shall see.

          • Wor Lass

At least you`re in a beautiful part of the world. Mind you, I remember walking through China town many years ago doing my best to keep moving and not make eye contact with anyone. It was a rough old joint – made a trip through the Bigg Market on a Saturday night seem like a Sunday School outing!

        • Steven05

That’s my problem with the #ifRafaGoesWeGo stuff

Why? Why wait until we’ve lost him to an actual football club?

    • Stephen Paylor

Not enough to stop going to games. Widespread smashing up of SD stores, website hacks, SD picket lines, anything to hurt that tight see you next tuesday.

      • 1ewis

        Keep it legal please.

        • Stephen Paylor

Suspended sentence for 1000 Geordie martyrs would be a badge of honour. We probably see it different 1ewis. You damage my family or passions that i hold dear and i damage everything you have.

  • Mung Bean

Meme for (Ashley’s) Sports Direct United… “Chump Change Kings”.

  • Mr_Kinnear

Did I miss the big news that Steve Howey was talking about? Perhaps he has the same source as Moscow.

    • Wor Lass

No, it was all over the Chronic – we`re looking at loads of top European talent. It`s only a matter of time …..!

  • fistsofsteel2

And Ashley’s demanding £300million for a bunch of virtually worthless players on today’s market, and a club that is in total disarray. Nobody in their right mind would waste £300million on NUFC. He isn’t selling – he knows Kenyon – it’s just Ashley’s annual joke at the fans expense.
When will you lot stop being mugs and stop attending games? Man up, wise up, grow a pair, and stay away.

    • LEE

just i may Most on here had Lascelles valued at 50+ million, shelvey was at least 30 million, Kennedy over 30 million. Rafa has made them go backwards. with his ultra negative football. Murphy was nearly 12 mill, we would be lucky to get 5, now, Muto 9.5, most times not even a bench warmer like murphy, yet Haydon who does not want to be here gets to play

      • Tony English

..and those valuations were reached under…..? Rafa. So by your reckoning he made them go forward and now backwards? Players lose form, or have to adapt to cover deficiencies of those around them, the issue on the main is with the squad not the manager.

Ultra negative? The performance yesterday wasn’t even negative let alone ultra negative.

        Take your blinkers off.

        • The BBC is FAKENEWS

It’s not so much blinkers, he’s either a child or just an idiot

      • The BBC is FAKENEWS

Kennedy is on Loan, Muto has been injured and Hayden is our fourth choice centre midfielder which means that he has to play if two of the other three are injured or away on international duty. Hayden was told he couldn’t leave because Rafa could not get any assurance that he would be given the money from the sale to replace him.

  • Stephen Paylor

I proposed a couple of years ago we create a break away club Geordie FC and storm up the pyramid. I set up a website facebook page etc. A club of our own, got a few messages of support and that was it. I have some money to put in but if enough of us, say 50,000 put in just 100 pound each that would be enough to take over the heed and rebrand them and start looking for a stadium. Get Shearer, Ant and Dec behind it and some bigger people with some capital and within just 5 years we can be a bigger club and in the premier league. Anything is better than this fat cxxt making a fool of us surely?

  • ZinUru

With every game that I watch the Hatred for Mike Ashley grows. we are a bad joke. He has crushed the spirit of NUFC. Forget about the Annual Fakeover. If you love the toon Stay away he will never leave while the ground is full

Can’t see it this time around. At best a couple of loan signings.

      • JohnnyH

I agree, couple of loan signings at best, but if he does spend a few mill it’ll be happy days for 40 – 50.000 regular match goers

Point I make is we’re soft as $hyte too easily pleased.

We want rid of the fat bastardo whatever happens…

  • LEE

rafa for this season is already on the same points per game as Shteve Mac. .86 , and Rafa’s is probably going to get worse in the next few games .
is he trying to get sacked, because it’s better for him than walking

    • Tony English

Shteve had money to spend and couldn’t coach the best out of the players he had at his disposal, that’s the difference.

      • LEE

Rafa had those same players, Rafa bought the players he chose, Steve had them bought for him by Carr,
        Rafa sacked Carr.

        • The BBC is FAKENEWS

And? Just showing yourself up there

        • Tony English

Five players during Shteves short tenure were bought over the 10m mark in two transfer windows.

Rafa has spent over 10m once, and he’s been looking in the bargain bins for five transfer windows, now in his sixth.

I’m not saying the signings by Shteve/Carr were good buys, but the fees spent, and taking into account the inflation in transfers in that time, to judge Rafa at the same level you would have to have given him a minimum of 2.5 players at 20m per transfer window.

Add 12 players at 20m …how do you think Rafa would be doing?

        • Tweed Mag

And Rafa steered the team to 10th. Modest investment before this season started would have seen an improvement, not another relegation scrap.
          Get real.

      • Cushty lad

Was never a fan of Mac but he’s doing a great job with QPR with basically loan players & nobody’s.

    • The BBC is FAKENEWS

Schteve was given Shelvey and Townsend to help keep them up. Another two players like that this time around would do nicely.

However, Mike Ashley knows that Rafa is a much better manager and would rather pocket the cash and take a gamble on Rafa keeping us up with a threadbare squad of championship players.

  • Leicester Mag

Can anyone hand on heart say they got anything from last night’s game? What is the point in a club that chooses not to compete? This is no longer the Newcastle United we fell in love with, it’s a grotesque characterure of it. There’s nothing left. What does it take for fans to wake up to the reality that our club is gone and has been stolen in front of their eyes, bit by bit? Surely the time has come to walk away and stay away even if it takes us to the edge of oblivion afterall we are being inexorably limping there anyway?

    • John Partland

I haven’t watched a single game since the Huddersfield win, and in my opinion Cardiff is the next chance of any sort of result followed by Huddersfield in Feb, I won’t bother with the games in between, because simply put, I know there’s no hope, I know we won’t compete, I know we will just try not to get beat and defend the entire game in those 5 matches and lose anyway. I know were not capable of pulling off shock results. Not Rafas fault, We’d struggle in the championship with this team and probably will next season without Rafa. Blackburn at the weekend, expect a weakened team and yet another apparent cup shock. Albeit Newcastle being knocked out by championship teams in the 3rd round of the cup is hardly a shock.

      • The BBC is FAKENEWS

        Cardiff is a must win

    • Themoscow72

We more than matched them last night and away. It took a goal keeping error for them to score. Should the Man Utd fans walk away as well as they are no better than us.

    • Tweed Mag

Before you go on another wind-up session, could you start answering some of the points you came up with on other articles:

      1. Where is the £60m you said was going to be spent on new players
      2. Where is the £80m you say McClaren spent on players accounted for in your figures
      3. You said the word on the street is a £280m bid would be successful. What has happened since you told us that.
4.Do you think we would be better off without Ashley
      5. Are you on the payroll

      • Big Hairy Man

He cherry picks figures that suit his agenda and conveniently omits those that don’t glorify his beloved Lord and Master. He basically talks out of his @rse-crack.

      • Kneebotherm8

See Steve Howeys information on the sale of the club before yesterday’s game was a load of tosh……..he must have been talking to mugpie in a lift at some stage..

      • Themoscow72

Please see my answer above as Batty destroyed an attacking team there is no doubt about it and cost us the league.
With regard to your other question.
        1) There should be round £40m to £60m in the bank at this time but whether it is spent depends on whether we can attract the right players.
2)McClaren spent £83m on Shlvey, Townsend, Saivet, Wijnaldum, Mitro, Thauvin, Mbemba and a few others and where did it get ius relegated.
        3) No one has come up with the money as yet and any deal will be in instalments.
        4) It does not look like it at this moment in time as no one has any money.
        5) Quite the opposite the powers that be at St James’s Park would like to see me banned but that is another story pardon the pun.

        • Tweed Mag

In a post yesterday you went to great lengths to explain how money was spent on players, year on year. McClaren spent £83m according to your calculations. You then stated that money was spent when it was available, but explained that the club was ‘overdrawn’ most of the time. The question was clear – where does the £83m appear in your version of the accounts?
Funny how the money was available then and not now, with about £123m in TV money plus transfer profits/ installments unavailable for team strengthening.
I’m pleased you are not my accountant.

      • JohnnyH

Don’t hold your breath waiting for an answer.

Monk talks about what he knows…the difference is that he does not know what he is talking about. He says that he “knows” the balance sheet of the club.Reality is that he knows sfa about it.The best thing he can do is not to offer any opinion on club balance sheets, gearing ratio etc if it is not fact

        • Tweed Mag

True. He makes it up as he goes along. Inevitably he contradicts himself, then disappears. He takes his lead from the oaf – no one in their right mind believes a word he says.

    • pedrodelgardo

You are clueless, Batty was a players player with a subtle game you probably couldn’t see, it got him into England’s starting World Cup team – I can see the usefulness of your posts now – which I knew anyway, divvy.

      • Themoscow72

Please see above for the true facts. Batty destroyed our team.

        • pedrodelgardo

See Geordie Zebras’s response, I think you need to learn that stats can tell part of a story but rarely tell the whole story, you have a point of view that you think is made right by looking up stats that support your naieve case. Grow up man!

          • Themoscow72

Why will never forgive him for costing us the league. Had he played Lee Clark against Man utd it would have been 14 homes games won in a row. Why change a team which had won 13 in a row crazy. The day Keegan began his departure was the day he dropped Lee Clark.

          • pedrodelgardo

Nowt to do with Schmeical’s brilliance in the first half them?
Did Clarky have a knock or an upset stomach?
You don’t have the humility to know that we are bystanders with very little information so you go to the history books and work out stats that support your ill informed theory – useful to a nugget.

          • GeordieZebra

Not only is your view ignorant and representative of a tiny tiny minority (you), it’s hilarious that you’re still incorrectly whinging about it 20 years on.

Man up, move along to adulthood, take down your laminated Lee Clark poster.

You’re like a little girl once stood up at the prom!!!

          • Albert Stubbins

you blame one man for the failure to win the league and yet support the one man who IS singlehandedly destroying our club!! you come across as a simple minded fool. Your logic is absolutely baffling.

    • GeordieZebra

If that’s your real view then give up watching football and take up knitting. Batty was exceptional and winning the ball back quickly, retention and reading the game are what all the top midfielders do. Clown.

      • Themoscow72

So the 13 home games when Lee Clarke played before the back passer arrived the record was this. Played 13 won drew none lost none. Goals for 28 conceded 6. Average goals per game 2.15.
After Batty arrived homes games played 6 won four lost one and drew one. Goals for 8 conceded 3. Average goals per game 1.33.
Ginola and Gillespie relied on Lee Clark getting the ball up early something Batty could never do.

        • GeordieZebra

You can’t even spell Lee Clark correctly!!! Batty was clearly our best player for the remainder of the season after he signed. Bobby Lee and Sir Les dropped off and the whole squad couldn’t see it through. Blaming the late arrival is naive. Love the fact you’ve had to check this though. I never knew trolling required research.

          • Themoscow72

He passed backwards and sideways that is a fact and it cost us the league. I knew the stats anyway just not the no of goals. The day he signed the day our title dreams went up in smoke.

        • cmrowley

The wheels came off when Kevin decided he had to play Tino and dropped Gillespie, it fell to pieces after that. He bought Tino as a back up (his words) then decided he had to play with his new toy.

You can go and check the results from Feb 96 on wards after the Boro game when Tino made his debut. We went on a run of 2 wins in 8 games (5 defeats) immediately after. We had lost 3 games up to that point all season, Chelsea, Man U and Soton away.

We switched from 4-4-2 (or 4-4-1-1) to 4-3-3 with Ginola part of a midfield 3, and Asprilla playing with Ferdinand and Beardsley.

We lost 8 games that season, Batty started in 4 of those games, Clark started in 3. The other defeat, Bracewell played in midfield and neither Batty or Clark played.

          • Albert Stubbins

Perfect analysis- I would also add the pressure of the last half a dozen games was simply too much and the players didnt cope with it well collectively-similar to what happened to Liverpool a few seasons back. The man utd home defeat was the catalyst for this.

          • cmrowley 5+

  • Kneebotherm8

The merry go round of mediocrity continues under Mike..

He (Ashley) is allowing this club to slowly die and there’s nowt we can do about it apart from watch from the sidelines.

  • X,WHY,Y MAN.

The most alarming thing about this whole sorry mess is the self delusion of Ashley and his so called Football Bored !
These lunatics really think you can compete in The Premiership operating with prices from a quarter of a century ago !

  • Carl Marks

I heard this on 5 Live – Big Al interrupted the commentator, when a new owner was mentioned, with
    “We need one!!”
I wish he’d be more scathing of Ashley on national media –
his strong condemnation would go a very long when it comes to exorcising the club of Ashley.
After all,he(Shearer) is “one of us”!!!!
