Watford 1 Newcastle 1 – Instant NUFC fan/writer reaction as United let it slip away

Watford 1 Newcastle 1  – Saturday 29 December 3pm

We asked a number of our regular writers to give us a brief instant reaction after the final whistle.

Newcastle taking a first half lead and looking as though it would be a massive three points, only to gift an equaliser late on.

Rafa’s team have Man Utd and Chelsea next in the Premier League…

Brian Standen:

“Well it’s a good point but feels like two dropped!

“That said, it was a good performance and justifies Rafa’s selection

“Fine lines and margins always seem to go against us and Rondon was offside by the proverbial width of a hair (for a first half chance).

“Good performances by plenty but I thought Atsu and Richie played particularly well today.

“Hard game against a resurgent Man Utd up here on Wednesday but they are not in the same league as their neighbours or Liverpool so points are possible

Happy new year.”

Nat Seaton:

“Disappointing to concede in the last 10 minutes but it could have been worse with their late chance.

“Another precious point away from home but not sure 18 points from 20 matches form is going to be enough to keep us out of the bottom three, with teams behind us starting to pick up points.

“We need to start picking up points at home, starting on Wednesday!”

David Punton:

“The final game of the calendar year and it’s a point on the road.

“It was close to a win but we just couldn’t quite hold out. Damn!

“After the mauling at Anfield this was a better day at the office and we’d all have probably taken a draw here, given what we have spent and the ongoing shambolic way Ashley is running the club.

“It’s been a tough few weeks with that Fulham horror show, negative transfer prospects and takeover tales, but it’s all about perspectives, and if we’d clung on Rafa would have been back to being a genius.

“We’re thankful for Rondon’s clinical header.

“He’s a key player for the cause as he holds the ball up and uses his power so effectively leading the line.

“The league table still looks perilous but we’re about the same as we were at this stage last season.

“See you all in 2019 for more NUFC fun and misery.”

Jonathan Drape-Comyn:

“Well, that’s what happens when you don’t go for the second goal!

“A really good first 45 minutes, lots of positives, we were direct, lots of pace.

“Sent out for the second half to play on the edge of our own box, and make no serious effort to get up the pitch.

“Diame and Hayden were pretty much sat on top of the two centre halves in the second 45.

“Just so negative, we may have a dreadful squad but sometimes I just don’t understand why we have to be so negative.

“A really good first 45, but we brought it on ourselves.

“Perhaps a good point, but in the grand scheme of things, I think that means we will need a win over one of Man U, City, Spurs or Chelsea.

“Can’t see that happening.”

Jamie Smith:

“I’d have taken a point but…

“Cardiff and Fulham’s late wins, combined with the horrendous set of fixtures ahead and the likelihood that everyone else will strengthen next month while we loan (maybe), looks highly ominous.

“The match v Cardiff at St James is a laminated, double underlined must-win, but the drag factor of our dismal home crowd could scupper that.

“Next month is one to watch from between the fingers.

“Was hopeful for Shelvey’s return, but his only contribution of note, was to allow them to equalise.

“Just got to wait and hope there’s three worse than us.”

Paul Patterson:

“It always seem to go wrong when Shelvey’s on the pitch.

“Sitting back for 90 minutes is always a risk.

“That said, I would have taken a point at the start.

“Unfortunately, results haven’t gone our way today.”

Toon Bano:

“We really needed those 3 points.

“Disappointing to concede late on as our home form is dreadful.

“I’m not hopeful of survival with teams below us capable of putting good runs together.

“January window is gonna be depressing, barring a miracle.”
