It was Steven Taylor up against Siem de Jong on Saturday.

The two former Newcastle players up against each other for the first time.

Steven Taylor signing for Wellington Phoenix  after Peterborough transfer listed him, Phoenix looking to improve on finishing second bottom last season.

Whilst after a disastrous return to Ajax where he started only four league matches last season, Siem de Jong is at reigning champions Sydney FC for a season as their ‘marquee’ signing.

Sydney were overwhelming favourites, with Wellington Phoenix having lost seven and drawn one of their last eight games against Sydney.

Wellington won just one away game last season and hadn’t even scored an away goal this season before today’s match.

In a remarkable first half Phoenix blew away the home side, scoring three times without reply.

Already two goals up, the 38th minute saw Steven Taylor score an excellent header from 15 yards out from a left wing wing cross.

You can see all highlights/goals below, Taylor’s goal coming on 1.09 if you want to go straight to that.

Siem de Jong was actually returning from his latest injury having only started one game so far, he came off the bench at half-time but had minimal impact.

Sydney scoring only a late consolation in the closing stages, final score 3-1 to Steven Taylor and Wellington Phoenix
