Tuesday night at St James Park and Elias Sorensen scored his 18th goal of the season.

A crowd of over a thousand Newcastle fans and a small travelling group of Macclesfield supporters saw an NUFC Under 21 side reach the last 16 of the Checkatrade Trophy.

They were up against League Two Macclesfield’s senior side and the young Magpies toughed it out.

Midway through the first half, winger Callum Roberts found Liam Gibson on the left and his cross was met by Elias Sorensen to give United the lead.

Watch it below, a real poacher’s goal by the 19 year old Dane who is in stunning form.

The highlights also show Nathan Harker’s penalty save that helped with the shootout 5-3, after Macclesfield scored a second half equaliser.

Elias Sorensen had been subbed shortly before the equaliser so he wasn’t around to take a penalty but thankfully all five of his teammates did.

A great result and it sees Newcastle’s kids through to the last 16 and still with the intriguing possibility of playing Sunderland, their first team also winning on Tuesday night, beating League Two Notts County at the Stadium of Light.

The last 16 draw is on Sky Sports at 12.20pm on Saturday (8 December).

As well as 18 goals altogether this season, Elias Sorensen now has 14 goals in his last 11 appearances.

For the team, the last 11 games in all competitions show nine wins, one draw and just the single defeat. In the process scoring an impressive 29 goals in the 11 games.

Hopefully if we avoid the drop before the end of the season this lad will be given a chance in the first team.

Yeah ideal scenario we have a cup run and are safe with half a dozen or so games to go. There would be no reason not to give him a run out then. I’m not advocating playing a weakend team for the cup but you could bring one or two fringe players in. Surely we could have Sorensen on the bench now – if by some chance we were 3-0 up why not give him 15-20 minutes

Is that sliding on the knees now part of regular training?

Seems like Elias missed two open chances. Needs to be more clinical. Been Dawson was right about the match. The team didn’t perform well but nicked the win.
Imho he would definitely struggle in our first team. Plus he’s not a finished product yet. The way we play would just make it even more harder for him to accommodate himself in the lone striker role. Rafa is definitely right on not playing him.
I am just speculating like anyone does.
To all those who keep saying that he needs to be in bench. We don’t see him train everyday but Rafa and Ben see him train. Rafa knows something we don’t. So…. keep calm

      Balanced comments..

  • WoW! Defensive errors aside, our U21s look like a decent Championship side!
Playing with confidence and very good timing on runs and passes.
I think Sean, Roberts, Matty and Sorensen deserve a bench role or loan chance after January. Massive achievement for Dawson’s team!

Roberts is really good. He looked good in the pre season too
