The value of Alan Shearer in educating Ian Wright can’t be underestimated as he has latest go at Mike Ashley

Ian Wright is becoming a bit of a legend when it comes to exposing Mike Ashley and being a friend to the Newcastle United fanbase.

The former Arsenal star is an unlikely ally for Newcastle fans but over time (see below) he has become ever more critical of what Ashley is doing to our club.

For neutrals, it is far easier to dismiss what Newcastle fans say, even those who are famous, than it is to rubbish what somebody like Ian Wright says.

The player turned pundit knows his stuff as well, unlike so many non-Newcastle supporters who like to pass judgement on our club.

The work put in by Alan Shearer in educating his fellow pundit can’t be underestimated.

Put it this way, if Ian Wright wasn’t best mates with the NUFC legend, is there any chance he would be coming out with such top stuff?

Ian Wright speaking this week to BBC Radio 5 Live:

“Looking with a critical eye towards the owner (Mike Ashley), I’m not bashing or anything….but for him to come out at this point and mention about the ‘sale’ (of Newcastle United), I was thinking to myself, ‘has he said this simply because he doesn’t want to buy anyone in January?’

Something about it just made me go ‘it is a bit weird’ for him to come out at this stage and mention selling the club, to build up everybody’s expectations….

“So is he going to buy anyone?

“(Ashley’s story will be) No he’s not going to buy anyone because he doesn’t know if he’s going to sell.

“It felt really awkward at a time when Newcastle are really starting to get going because this manager is brilliant….Rafa, brilliant.

“He is working with peanuts and still getting a good tune out of Newcastle.

“So I hope for the sake of Newcastle fans it is not a false dawn and he is not doing it so he doesn’t have to spend money.

“The fact is, Newcastle are the only ones that when they stay in the league, they don’t get the money (to spend on the squad).”

Ian Wright talking to BBC Radio 5 Live – 1 October 2018:

“What Mike Ashley is doing to Newcastle is similar to what the Romans used to do to the Barbarians. Just come in somewhere and totally took it over.

“Don’t care about what is going on, what’s going on with the infrastructure, the people living there, just took over and do everything he (Mike Ashley) wants.

“All he has done at Newcastle…I speak to Al(an Shearer) all the time

“I don’t joke and mess around with him about it now because it is too close to the bone what is actually going on with Mike Ashley with his take, take, take.

“You mention Liverpools and like what Manchester City have done, what Abramovich (at Chelsea) has done, they have built the community as well.

He (Mike Ashley) has done nothing for Newcastle or the area, or anything.

“The monies Newcastle have continually made from being in the Premier League, where is it?

“One of the best managers in the world (Rafa Benitez), a man who is capable of doing a lot….where is that money?

“What has happened to it?

“Why are there no players bought at Newcastle?

“Why is there no infrastructure?

“What is he (Ashley) doing for the area of Newcastle?

“What is he doing, what is Mike Ashley doing at Newcastle, apart from take, take, take?

“Newcastle fans have been unbelievable with the patience they have got.

“They are desperate for somebody to buy it…Peter Kenyon, you would hope he would come in and change stuff.

I just feel for Newcastle fans right now because it is not even a joke anymore.

“It is not a joke, it is terrible what has gone on at Newcastle.”

Ian Wright speaking to Sky Sports – 9 August  2017:

“I don’t think Newcastle are strong enough to perform well at the moment.

“I think Rafa Benitez is in a great position…

“He has said: ‘OK, I will deal with what I have got’ – if it is not going well going into Christmas it will then start getting restless and it will go back to what it was before.

“If Newcastle had the money and had the right people, they could attract players, because once it gets going up at St James Park it is pretty awesome.”

Ian Wright speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live – 21 April 2015:

“If Newcastle fans genuinely feel that strongly about Mike Ashley then don’t go.

“Don’t keep coming on the show and saying Mike Ashley…you know, do things like and stuff like that, do something.

“Why should Mike Ashley do anything when he knows you are all going to turn up because you love the club so much.

“If twenty thousand stay away…the fans are doing something to say we love the club so much we’d rather not watch them because we hate the fact that you (Mike Ashley) are still here.

“We’d rather not watch and support them than come and watch, that is what Newcastle fans have to do.”
