Sky Sports pundit says Rafa Benitez has to be given January cash if Newcastle United are to avoid relegation
Tony Cottee was covering the Liverpool v Newcastle match for Sky Sports.
The former Everton and West Ham player admitting after the game ‘I don’t know what to make of Newcastle.’
The Sky Sports pundit thought Rafa/Newcastle just accepted the defeat once they were a goal or two down and he can’t understand why the NUFC manager didn’t do more to try and change things.
Putting Longstaff on for Kenedy at two down and only 17 minutes remaining was as good as it got, Salomon Rondon left on the bench.
Rafa Benitez had said in advance of the game at Anfield, that even if money is spent in January, it might not be enough to prevent relegation.
Asked about January spending, Tony Cottee says Rafa has to be given money to spend or else Newcastle are definitely in danger of relegation.
However, he says ‘most importantly’ is that Benitez has to then buy the right players.
How much money there is to spend, has a direct correlation with having any chance of bringing in the correct players.
Sadly, if pushed into only looking for bargains yet again, especially up front, we will end up landed with the likes of another Joselu, who incidentally was abysmal this afternoon.
Tony Cottee speaking on Sky Sports:
“Newcastle tried and had a few little moments in the first 20 minutes.
“But they went a goal down and were probably perfect opponents for Liverpool.”
“is Rafa Benitez right to be saying doom and gloom, saying if we don’t spend we will be relegated?”
“I don’t know what to make of Newcastle.
“They come with a game plan, which is fair enough, but after 11 minutes you go behind.
“You can’t just keep defending…at some stage you have got to change things around.
“The only change he made was to take off Kenedy and brought a young lad, Longstaff, on – he did ok when he came on.
” You can argue, as Rafa Benitez got the players?
“But I look at the bench and he has got Rondon, he has got Perez, he has got players who can potentially make a difference.
“He didn’t make too many changes and in the end they sort of just accepted…we’re at Anfield, let’s keep it down to three or four, then move on.
“They have Watford away which is a tough game, then Man U and Chelsea, so it is not going to get any easier for them.
“In terms of Newcastle staying up?
“Yes Rafa Benitez needs some money and most importantly, when he gets that money, he has got to buy the right players.”
