Wednesday night sees an early opportunity for Rafa and his players to get back on track, the predicted Newcastle team v Everton below.

Who will Rafa Benitez go for?

The Newcastle boss has to make at least one change with Matt Ritchie suspended after his fifth yellow card.

However, I think it is a good bet that there will be more than just the one.

The three/five at the back seemed to work really well at Burnley and Rafa may have regretted not keeping it for West Ham.

Manquillo was shocking and whatever happens, I can’t see him keeping his place.

With Dubravka in goal, going back to three centre-backs could then have Kenedy and Yedlin as wing-backs.

Fabian Schar chose a particularly bad time to have a poor game with Lascelles back in the matchday squad on Saturday. I can see Clark and Lascelles coming back into the team to play alongside Federico Fernandez.

A bit harsh on Schar obviously but it would be no surprise to see Rafa bring is captain back in, whilst the left-footed Clark gives balance.

The options aren’t great in terms of replacing Ritchie like for like, Atsu came off the bench  against West Ham and was once again terrible.

I can see Jonjo Shelvey definitely starting and making up a three man midfield with Diame and Ki, to try and get some control of the game.

Muto wasn’t even able to make the bench against the Hammers so the forward alternatives will be limited.

I wouldn’t be that surprised to see this being the type of game where Rafa might use Perez as his sole striker as he has occasionally done in the past, the win at Stoke last season a prime example of when it has worked.

On balance though I think he will keep both Rondon and Perez in, plus at least with Wolves being on Sunday, the likes of Rondon has an extra day to recover.

This being my predicted Newcastle team v Everton:

newcastle team v everton

A team that will hopefully get Newcastle back on track..

I thought Lascelles didn’t like playing in a back five?

    • Kenny

Rafa may go, 4-3-2-1 or 4-5-1

      • nufcslf

Very much so, even though I hate the defensive hang onto your hat likely to be defending a loss formation. Oh well, with squad he has there isn’t much choice.

    • Vodkamagpie

Shame, doesn’t lascelles like playing in a back 5, oh dear

  • Kenny

Schar didn`t choose a time to have a bad game he came up against superior forwards than in the previous 3 wins, i said he`d be caught short & he was,
    Lascelles must come back in.
Perez, i would rather play 1 up front than have him anywhere near the starting 11.
    where`s Dummett.

  • glassjawsh-got-banned

I predict we will lose. No matter which woefully underfunded team Rafa trots out.

    • nufcslf

Very likely. Not sorry I will be at work and only able to check the score later in the day.

  • BigHairyDog

If only Rafa could pick Dummett…sad how far we’ve dropped.

      Eight men? Interesting..

      • BigHairyDog

A keeper, three at the centre backs, four across the middle, two wingers/deep lying forwards and a striker adds up to eleven for me

        • Paul Patterson

Ah, had to tilt my phone to see the wide men. Sorry.. 😂😂

      • nufcslf

Who’s needs 11 player’s with options we have??!!

  • Damon Horner

Personally don’t think there was much between the performance of Schar and Fernandez, I reckon it’ll be an unchanged back four unless Lascelles comes in.

    • Leazes.

Rafa never throws players back in unless fully fit…. bench is the next step.

      • Damon Horner

Most of the time. His Captain in CB when the bus is due to park is the time to break the routine if at all. I’m expecting we’ll be unchanged at the back.

        • Leazes.

The bus will be back after going on a mystery tour upfield on Saturday.

          • Paul Patterson

I’d park the Perez on the bench ..

  • I think Muto will start instead of Perez, and probably Shelvey starting alongside Diame again.
Would definitely go for a 5-3-2 again as against Burnley.
