Paul Merson “Newcastle have the players capable of causing damage but…”
Paul Merson has been looking ahead to this afternoon’s match at Vicarage Road.
Not only have Newcastle never won a Premier League game away at Watford, they have never won a top tier match here in the entire history of the two clubs.
In the 2009/10 promotion season, Newcastle actually did the double over today’s opponents, 2-0 at St James Park and 2-1 away thanks to Carroll and Coloccini goals.
Prior to that, you need to go back to 1991 for the previous league victory at Vicarage Road, Mick Quinn and John Anderson scoring in a second division victory.
In the here and now, we have two very different clubs, Watford having both scored (26 v 14) and conceded more (27 v 26) than Newcastle United.
Watford play adventurous attacking football, whilst Rafa Benitez…does what he thinks is best to try and scrape together enough points for survival.
A rather strange comment and backhanded compliment from Paul Merson as he declares: ‘Newcastle have the players capable of causing damage but this isn’t the game for them.’
Difficult to identify these ‘players capable of causing damage’ at the moment but just maybe the return of Jonjo Shelvey could spark something better from the team overall. Get Kenedy producing and a better supply line to Salomon Rondon.
Paul Merson goes for a 2-0 home win and says that the reality is that Rafa Benitez will ‘make it hard for Watford’ but when you have a team that doesn’t score goals, then you are really up against it.
Outside the top six only three clubs have scored more than Watford whilst only Huddersfield have scored less than Newcastle.
Merson believing that Watford have the ‘firepower’ to take the points.
If Newcastle are to get a surprise victory, you can only imagine that it will follow a similar path to the game at St James Park, soak up the pressure and find a goal from a set-piece or break.
With Man Utd and Chelsea up next, Rafa Benitez could certainly do with getting a break in this game.
Paul Merson speaking to Sky Sports:
“Newcastle were very poor against Liverpool and I don’t think they even had a shot against Fulham.
“They will make it hard for Watford, they just don’t score any goals.
“And they will get punished by a Watford side with plenty of firepower going forward.
“Newcastle have the players capable of causing damage but this isn’t the game for them.
“Prediction is Watford 2 Newcastle 0.”
