The Magpie Group have released a statement on Thursday morning, explaining why they have cancelled the planned Newcastle v Wolves boycott.

As well as that, they have also called off all protests at Newcastle’s matches until after the transfer window has ended.

The reason given is that so fan protests can’t be blamed if a sale of the club by Mike Ashley fails to materialise.

The owner claiming on Monday in a Sky News interview that he believed a sale of Newcastle United was imminent, with a sale even possible before the end of the month.

The Magpie Group statement:

In light of recent developments concerning a potential takeover of the club in the very near future, members of The Magpie Group have taken the opportunity to re-evaluate its proposed boycott of Newcastle United’s home game against Wolverhampton Wanderers this Sunday.

After careful consideration, and following consultation with a number of Newcastle fans across the divide, we have decided to postpone the boycott to a later date; a provisional date has been set for United’s home game against Huddersfield Town in February.

This decision has not been taken lightly and was made in response to Mike Ashley’s appearance on Sky News on Monday night and further revelations in the media since.

Although we continue to have very deep reservations about Mike Ashley’s resolve to sell Newcastle United Football Club, we understand that any protest activity which could have a negative implication on Sunday’s result could jeopardise the potential sale of the Club.

Alongside this, we will be suspending all protest activity at Newcastle United games until after the closure of the January transfer window.

This suspension period is designed to allow Mike Ashley and any potential investors a clear run at reaching a deal, an outcome which, needless to say, provided the stimulus for the inception of The Magpie Group in the first place.

Our decision is also intended to preclude Keith Bishop Associates from laying the blame at the door of supporters if a sale does not come to pass.

If a takeover has not been completed by the end of this period, then protest activity will resume at the away game against Tottenham Hotspur in early February.

Whilst this is the official position of The Magpie Group, we fully recognise and support the right of individuals and groups to protest on Sunday if they wish to do so. Indeed, individual members of the Group are proceeding with their own plans to boycott the game.

Further to this, protest activity aimed at Mike Ashley and his retail interests will continue, and will not cease until the sale of the club has been agreed. To this end, we will continue to work with members of the London Magpie Group, who have done excellent work in trooping the colours and preserving the integrity of Newcastle United fans in the capital recently.

As the Newcastle fanbase keenly observes developments over the next few days and weeks, we truly hope that this is not another false dawn and that, this time, Mike Ashley genuinely wants to sell.

We also hope that any potential sale will be a true “clean break”, and that all ties between the Club and Mike Ashley’s retail outlets will be severed upon its completion.

If Newcastle United Football Club is subjected to similar circumstances to Rangers Football Club, then The Magpie Group and the London Magpie Group will be left with no choice but to continue targeting Mike Ashley, his retail interests, and his known associates.

    Spineless

  • Jonathan Drape-Comyn

Absolutely gutless. Protest movement revolves around Mike Ashley being a proven liar. All of a sudden, that proven liar Mike Ashley gives one interview and everyone is weak at the knees.

    Gutless.

    • Leazes.

Who is it inside the group that did this Jonathan?

      • Jonathan Drape-Comyn

Honestly i don’t know. What I do know is that the idea that TF and TMG are separate entities is not true.

London Magpie Group were informed about it happening, but their opinion was deemed irrelevant.

Rats running from a sinking ship to maintain their own reputation if you ask me.

        • Leazes.

TF…..Thats Alex Hust man….. Mark Jensen’s mate…. support the team not the regime… bring back the noise…. friend of the trolls, friend of Ryder… owner of every taxi firm in south northumberland….

….ever wonder how he got access to use the gallowgate concourse to put his flags together…. friend of charnley!

          • Jonathan Drape-Comyn

I don’t think that’s true at all about Mark. I don’t know who his friends are but you can never accuse him of nepotism or letting others influence him imo.

I completely disagreed with his most recent article but he still makes fair, and always honest points.

As for TF, they only care about themselves and their own reputation. They just want to be the people everyone talks about, they want to be the super fans etc.

MM is a bit of w**** but i think his no1 priority is always Newcastle doing well. Can’t say the same for Alex Hurst (again, imo).

          • Themoscow72

Thanks for that. As you know have offered to meet you many times and buy you a pint. Was there Tuesday night, at Everton will be at Morpeth on Saturday and Wolves Sunday. Yes I am a top twenty fan which does not make me any better than anyone else but it proves I am not a troll. One of my best mates is friends with your family goes to every game if not working was with me last night. Believe me protests do not work only money talks sad but true.

          • Jonathan Drape-Comyn

            MM = Michael Martin.

            Sorry, should have clarified.

          • Jonathan Drape-Comyn

            sorry MM = Michael Martin

            should have clarified.

Until you stop condoning those who leave early every game when the team need their support you’ll never truly be one of our top fans – fraud.

          • Wezza

            MM is a troll.
Here are some of his quotes:

            “Long live Mike”
“Rafa gets every penny” (after THAT summer window)
“I’d gladly buy Mike a pint”
            “Mike saved us”
“Mike was very generous with the loan”
            “If Ashley goes we go”

            Definition:
‘make a deliberately offensive or provocative online post with the aim of upsetting someone or eliciting an angry response from them.’

Hence he is a troll no matter what he says.

  • Dutch

According to the news this morning, Kenyon has not managed to get all the money and therefore there is no progress with a deal. Ashley wins again and we have stopped the boycott. Good result all round NOT.

  • Andynufc

They’ve just shown themselves up as the joke group they are

  • Wor Lass

This magpie group has been a flop. They don`t seem to be able to organise a pi$$ up in a brewery (is that possible in Newcastle nowadays?) but I think this decision is right. I`m in agreement with boycotting but it`s an individual decision and this call was never going to be backed by enough fans for it to be effective. The Magpie Group would have just looked what they are – aimless, devoid of meaningful strategy and lacking support on the ground. All thse people intending to boycott can still do so. Individual and small group actions have been the only successes so far. If there`s going to be a Magpie Group they need to be better connected and think bigger – create or find a credible buyer. So far they`ve been as effective as 1970`s government efforts to avoid the oil crisis by telling us to switch lights off.

    • Kneebotherm8

When the sale doesn’t go through it’ll be more ammunition and evidence,if that were needed, for the Magpie Group to resume their protests against the incumbent, immovable FCB…………some actually believe all this club sale bull💩 is genuine…………the man is pssing himself laughing at us…..

      • Wor Lass

I`m not saying people should give up, I`m saying the magpie group are irrelevant. Because they called for a boycott doesn`t mean one would happen – not a meaningful one, anyway. they don`t really speak for many fans as the 11th minute walk-in demonstrated. The most effective protests have been the basket-loading on the $hite Direct site and the small groups of fans who demonstrated in Ponteland and Parliament. Individuals should keep up the pressure and any “overarching” group should look at the bigger picture by trying to organise a credible buyer for the club.

        • Leazes.

It always was…. the call for the boycott has come from people on the net like me not from the Magpie group….

…..they don’t have the right to cancel something that they simply backed…. it is a call to stay away….. nothing organised, you don’t need to do anything pro active….

          ….just Boycott

          • Wor Lass

My point in a nutshell. It`s individual fans who have moved things along with their actions. It doesn`t seem like there`s a masive groundswell of support at the moment and you can`t just manufacture that by calling yourself the “Blah blah” group or whatever. If/when Fatty`s bluff is called, the January window is a washout and Rafa walks then things will escalate. Until then, Bishop and Co are winning the phoney war – in the stadium at least.

    • Leazes.

Its too loose a group with a spectrum of politics….. the fairs club are in there….. True faith are in there that includes our chum Simon Carr….can you see Malcolm Dix, and John Hall standing with the Irish lads?

    • Peaco

Spot on. I agree that they’ve bottled it; concerned there wouldn’t be enough support. If that’s the case then it’s a damning indictment of their credibility as a protest movement. I’ve attended a protest with the London Magpie Group so i’m Not a protest denier by the way, and whilst the London Magpie Group (albeit small) are well organised and doing great work, the Magpie Group are looking pretty shambolic by comparison.

  • JohnnyH

    Bye bye Magpie Group.

  • Ken

What the %@#, the Magpie has just let him off the hook, never was a sale never will be, he has won again

  • KennySamsung

It is stiil the wrong decision not to boycott even if the vast majority will be in their seats by kick off.

Unbelievable that the MG believe a sale is imminent therefore lets not boycott. What difference is a boycott going to make anyway, anyone doing their homework on Nufc will know it’s sad Ashley we want out.

Sometimes you just have to sit back and smile loudly.

    • X2

Even if there were potential buyers (I know, huge stretch) the Boycott would have only made it more likely that Ashley would do a deal. The MG are afraid of Keith Barnes? Honestly? They’ll have cracked the champagne in the KBA offices this morning and be having a massive laugh (again) at the mug NUFC supporters. FFS.

    • Leazes.

The group buckled to the sneers of the fainthearted….. but inside that group are the ‘Fairs Club’ and other conservatives like true faith.

When Mark Jensen called for it to stop it meant a betrayal….. Simon Bird was the first Journo to try and scupper it actually going to print…. Ryder keeping his head down and letting Douglas lead for the chronicle.

When your own fanzine is trying to undermine, then there is no hope….. these media people have done their job…. for Ashley.

….My god they’ve done it well…. nice timing Mark Jensen.

      • X2

Those who hate NUFC are celebrating.

Very good work Ashley. Tell more lies and watch us crumble. Again.

    Same time next year?

    • Leazes.

Hey …. the club doesn’t matter…all that matters is the fans have a day out and are entertained….. that is the political philosophy of the chronicle and all of their writers….

      ….winning things…. that’s for the proper clubs!

So long as Brian Standen, Simon Carr, Alex Hurst and there Ilk can enjoy a jolly boys trip then all is well!

      • Steven05

Honestly, part of me just wants to turn my back on the whole pathetic excuse of a club – including a percentage of the fans. This is not the club I’ve loved. That club never won anything, the people at the top still made money from it, some of the players were no good – but it felt like ‘Newcastle United Football Club’. This doesn’t.

        • Leazes.

When you have an owner who doesn’t care and a press that doesn’t care…. and are left with a fanbase of daytrippers, students and standens…..

There is no buyer….. there never was,

Ryder and his chums made out that Kenyon was the front runner….he has NO backers at this time! There is NO imminent take over…..and the chronicle knows it.

Nonsense….. Ashley will be creasing himself at the ease of wrapping this puppy dog press around his little finger!

Ryder backed Alex Hurst (True Faith) and his ‘bring back the noise’ and ‘Gallowgate flags’….and both are a good friend to the regime!

Hurst pushes the conservative agenda along with whoever is behind Porter and Smithfield here…. now who might that be?

Send in your trolls Alex Hurst and Simon Carr (”we had a great meeting at Seghill Conservative Club”)….. Yes I bet you did….is that the same one Standen uses?

….Yes you obviously planned a betrayal with compliant journo’s (Carr cant keep his gloating gob shut can he?) …

…..you bloody treacherous tramps….Get your heads out of your rectums!

      • Leazes.

        A sale won’t happen…

For a sale there needs to be a buyer, no one has come forward, all there is are lies and convenient rumours from the bought and paid for press.

      • Themoscow72

That means there will be 86 more people there on Sunday shock horror.

        • Toon Arnie

Still 15,000 leaving early though ( you included ) – shock, horror.
We need to boo these people for turning their back on the team at the 75 minute mark when they really need their support.

  • Tweed Mag

Oh dear. A surprise decision when you consider nothing has changed, apart from an interview with a liar and some media ‘coverage’.

I just cannot believe that the Magpie Group be fallen for the ‘protests will put off buyers’ excuse. Absolute rubbish.
We will not spend in January and the clu will not be sold!

What a bunch of fuckingyellow bellys’…….cluck cluck cluck….

  • Carverlier football

That’s disappointing – however I’ll tell you what, if come February the club isn’t sold, the tat signs are still up and nothing has been spent (options to buy don’t count), the protests should go nuclear – and nobody should have ANY excuse not to get behind them

    • Leazes.

…..until season ticket renewal when he does it again…..

      • TheFatController

So he would think he can come out and mention ‘credible buyers are at an advanced stage’ again, if he wasn’t making it up?

This is the first time he’s announced credible buyers. Ever.

        • Leazes.

If the leader Kenyon has no backers (he hasn’t) then the others are imaginary phantoms to push up a price….. Kenyon is either doing a Michael Knighton….. or being used to feign a takeover….. the latter being the most likely/.

          • Wezza

            ALL are imaginary phantoms.

    • Kev Newcastle England

They wont do it,25,000 Happy Clappers there

  • TheFatController

Ashley announces for the first time ever he has a bidder he thinks is not wasting his time, and is progressing the sale.

He mentions it on Sky because he wants the bidding parties to move quicker and get the sale done in December.

So, if he has credible buyers lined up and is pressuring them to compete, what is a protest aiming to achieve ? Make him give it away for free ?

    • Steven05

      Do you believe him?

      • TheFatController

Well, why would he stop the boycotts for one month before giving the pressure groups more ammunition and more followers in January?

He usually goes on holiday in December so what advantage does he get of stopping the Wolves protest with a tactic that will give him a bigger headache when he comes back off holiday ?

EVen he knows announcing a ‘phantom sale’ just before he goes on his holidays gets him no advantage whatsoever

        • Leazes.

You are right he does go on holiday every December…. it gets him another year then another….. a small spend to keep the club ticking over and pacify his chums Ryder and Douglas…… he can do it indefinitely.

Ashley didn’t say anything about Kenyon? He didn’t mention him. Ashely kept the bidders identities out of it.

Media with no info whatsoever mention Kenyon. They need a story, all they have is one name mentioned a month ago. So guess what they focus on?

Keep to what is being said and by who in all this, otherwise it’ll drive you crazy.

        Yes he did…..Daily Mail

          • TheFatController

          • Leazes.

            Who are they?

  • Lostprofit DBC

Sensible imo, agrees with my theory. The action can be taken in February if necessary. It’s not a sign of weakness….Ashley Out, Sky Out. 3 points the priority great point last night.

  • X,WHY,Y MAN.

I cannot help but think that this has just played into Ashley’s hands !
Do people honestly believe what the man is saying after 11 years of lies, Proven in a court of law ?
To stop their protest on the strength of that shows naivety, Weakness and a realisation that this man can manipulate them, And have them jumping through hoops at any given time.

I thought this protest might lack genuine support on the day but this has even surpassed my cynical view with this latest climbdown.
It’s like something out of Monty Python and this group now look as impotent as Roy Evans was !

Ashley will be sitting in his ivory tower counting his cash and laughing his backside off.

    • Wezza

      Beggars belief.

  • Rabid Dog

Here’s my take on this for what it’s worth. This is last chance saloon for Ashley. If he is lying about the sale then after the window closes in January, he can expect a much greater and wider backlash, than is likely to be displayed on Sunday.

The magpie group don’t want the failure of a potential sale (If there indeed is one) to be blamed by KBA on the fans protesting. They want it to be clear where the blame for any failure lies so that this can be leveraged in Feb.

Its a pragmatic approach. I’m not sure I agree, I’m not sure there are any buyers, but they have taken a position, which could unite more fans in February, than are united now.

    • Leazes.

It wasn’t a unanimous decision according to the statement….. they should name the individuals who actually made this decision on behalf of everyone else.

      • Rabid Dog

And the non-unanimous result probably represents the devide in the rest of the fan base. They always said it was a long game….

        Let’s see where it goes

        • Leazes.

It goes on…. hopefully without Alex Hurst, Simon Carr, Van der Velde and the rest of the traitors.

          • Wezza

Why would Simon Carr not like Keegan? He is still a troll.

    • Coble’s Return

Those saloon doors just keep swinging.

      • Rich Lawson

Bob Hope just left town then ?

    • Daniel Rogers

Wasn’t that said 5 lies ago

  • Coble’s Return

I am in two minds on this. Part of me thinks that the boycott would have failed due to the apathy of too many supporters and therefore, it was sensible to find a way out of going through with it at this stage. To state that it was to ensure that no blame for the failure of a deal could be placed at the feet of the protesters is as good an excuse as any.

However, I can’t help feeling that it would have been better to plough on, regardless of the degree of support for the protest. KBA / MA will point fingers and make excuses regardless. It will never be their fault. It does seem a little as though we are saying “OK – one last chance. But really now, if you don’t sell or buy players this time, then we really really really will do something”.

    • Leazes.

No it wouldn’t, asking people to do nothing is very different to asking them to do something….. stay in the warm….. watch on telly with a pint.

      • Lostprofit DBC

Will you be on the picket line?

  • tom

Couldn’t make this stuff up. Pure Gold

  • mentalman

I make that Mike Ashley 5 Protesters 0.

  • Squintytoonarmy

Protest cancelled as Moscow has snapped up last 1,000 tickets to make it a sell out

    • Themoscow72

Only eleven up to now but trying to get more people.

      • Kev Newcastle England

Do you think anyone actually believes you when you say you buy 11 tickets extra for a match??? You couldnt pay me to go there while FCB is around.

        • Themoscow72

Why would I make it up. Had to buy eight for Fulham as well for friends. Long live Mike will be sorry to see him go.

          • KRS1

We all know you haven’t got any friends

          • TheFatController

Well, he doesn’t give a flying f—- about you so it’s unrequted love.

And just before Xmas. Cue that Mud Xmas tune …

          • Toon Arnie

There’s more chance of you staying until full time than there is of the Fat Liar leaving.

        • Wezza

          He is just trolling mate.

      • Toon Arnie

More people to leave early with you ?

  • Rich Lawson

Oh ! That’s all right then, thanks for letting us know, any tickets left then ?

  • Daniel Rogers

    Mugs.. all mouth no trousers

  • Themoscow72

First of all well done for cancelling the protests. If we find a buyer ( Kenyon the best by a mile) who will all be happy. Got back from Everton and hoped for a few hours sleep before work but the phone kept going saying the boycott was off. That means eight six on the crowd and the loud mega phone up for auction at the quay side market on Sunday. With the protests off was glad to here a new group has been formed today. If Ashley goes we go.

    • JohnnyH

You go if Ashley goes, I’ll hold you to that monk.

      • Wezza

Is that what Simon Carr said? What a sad troll. I think I will hold him to that as well.

    • James Hopkins

      Why do you say we?

    • TheFatController

How can you say Kenyon is the best when no one has a clue if or who the others potentially bidding are?

    • Toon Arnie

There you go again Ashley ahead of the team. You could perhaps try ‘ if Ashley goes we go … 15 minutes before the final whistle’ as you condone the mass walkouts every game and always leave early yourself. Surely this is proof you are a fraud and don’t support the team at all, just Ashley. You didn’t go to Everton – fraud.

  • LA toon

Saves the embarressment of seeing 50,000 at the Wolves game! Should have a 79 minute walk out at all home games as it has some traction lately and by our recent form it will continue. I will be dead before that t wat sells the club. Reap what you sow.

    • Leazes.

It hasn’t been called off…..it wasn’t their show to call off……its not up to the Magpie group its now up to individuals to make a statement…. it always was a matter of people making up their own minds…..and walking out with 11 to go is an excellent idea.

      #BoycottWolves

      • Wezza

Even after the Jan window, when no takeover happens and no players are bought (and installment of TV money disappears) the season ticket holders will STILL go and STILL buy for next year. Staggering.

  • Mr_Kinnear

Protest after the transfer window closes is too late. Further damage will have been done. No new signings, Rafa off to a new club. Mark Hughes in charge. No sale as all were time wasters. At the very least do as one lad suggested. Give all the fans some sort of flag/poster yo wake about in SJP. Silent apathetic protest at least

    • DZA

      Agreed.

  • graham18

At present no one has come forward and knocked on his door said “MR.FCB can we make you an offer and can we buy your club?”.Its all media hype .Ashley’s done it to take the pressure off him.So I don’t see why we should not boycott the game,

    • Leazes.

I’ve said before that PR isn’t about direct influence it about bending compliant journalists…. and they do the groundwork.

Ashley wouldn’t and couldn’t have stayed this long without Ryder and Douglas pouring oil on troubled waters…. have a look at the front page of the Chronicle today…..”Call off the boycott”

This isn’t about saving face for lack of support….their own polls told them it would be supported!…… they ditched their own polls!

      • graham18

        nevertheless I’m still boycotting it

        • Leazes.

good lad hope you’ve got a season ticket…. watch from the pub or on tv

          • graham18

Oh yes I’ve got a season ticket.I’ll be watching it from home.FCB out!!

          • Phildene

And you’re still buying your seasons ticket?? But you want him out?? It beggars belief that you’re so hypocritical but so are most fans. No backbone to literally stop/ cancel your season ticket but don’t want him here-you can’t have it both ways!! As long as there’s gullible fans like you he will stay-simples

  • X2

Magpie Group. Those of you that will still be boycotting Wolves, there is a very big positive to come out of this – you now know who within The Magpie Group are your enemies. Suggest you start afresh without them. And thanks for the good work so far – you’ve made a difference to help reclaim our club.

  • Gareth Jones

That is just ridiculous. The bloke is still here man!!!! I don’t believe any takeover malarkey until he’s gone!!! It’s on a loop! Madness!!

  • RO-bert

Seems that the new ‘takeover talks’ have done the trick then.

Is it that time of the year again?

You know the coming months where NOTHING of any interest happens.

We’ll definitely be selling soon but sadly it’ll only be players.

  • Toon

Amazing how talk of a take over AND the news of a signing all happen in the week of a boycott. If Ashley playing tricks again, he has played the so called ‘super fans’ from TMG and True Faith etc like a fiddle.

  • TheFatController

Ashley is not mocking any of the protesters – he’s laughing at the fans who won’t turn on him, and how instead they just turn on the protesters.

If Ashley and his friends have made up the story of bidders so they can a week later say the bidders all pulled out due to the boycott, they’d be confident that’d put an end to all the protests.

    Why?

Because they know many fans want to fight their fellow fans so much they would believe Ashley’s bull readily. it gives them a chance to be self righteous and special.

Ashley respects the protesters, as much as he also hates them. However I suspect he loves the fans that won’t believe he is selling the club, but will believe protesters are worthy of more abuse than he is. Can you imagine how funny he finds that?

  • 5floorshigh

‘the one thing we learn from history is that we never learn’…Jonathon Pie…should be completely ignoring everything Ashley says, beggars belief how anyone can take the latest sale talks seriously. Boycott should go ahead and down to the individual not TMG.

  • Superdooperhooper

Calling off the boycott ? On the strength of what? The word of ashley ? Paper talk ? Hearsay? RIP the magpie group

  • Mickey Slater

FFS playing right into Ashleys hands.
