Newcastle 1 Wolves 2 – Instant NUFC fan/writer reaction to Sunday’s defeat

Newcastle 1 Wolves 2  – Sunday 9 December 4pm

We asked a number of our regular writers to give us a brief instant reaction after the final whistle.

Newcastle losing for the second home match in a row after having to play for over half an hour with 10 men.

Cruelly losing to an injury time goal.

Ben Cooper:

“It is always a cruel way to lose a game when you concede in the very last seconds but the warning signs were there as NUFC over-committed in the last 15 minutes on several occasions.

“Down to 10 men after an hour when Yedlin was sent off for a last man pull of the shirt on a Wolves attacker, it was a very un-Benitez-like way to see out the game and I’m sure he will be furious.

“Perez will get some grief for giving the ball away so cheaply but the midfield and defence will have questions to answer for letting their forward run with the ball for so long and get a shot away.

“After a fully committed team performance, they all have lessons to learn or suffer the painful consequences.”

Toon Bano:

“10 men or not, we aren’t going to stay up with a home record like ours.

“7 defeats at home already is a disgraceful return.

“If Newcastle Utd need to rely on their away form to stay in the Premier league then we all know we are screwed.”

George Stainsby:

“I don’t think we deserved to lose.

“Wolves took their final chance, while we didn’t.

“I would love to see passes that take advantage of the space being offered by runners, but either the runner isn’t seen, or isn’t expected, so the chances either become half-chances or fizzle into ‘nowt.

“Cracking header for our goal from Perez.

“Doomed? No.

“Worrying? Unless we start winning again, yes.”

Nat Seaton:

“Really hard to take…

“Scrappy game with very few chances.

“Considering we played over 30 minutes with 10 men, a point wouldn’t have been a bad result, but that was snatched away right at the death, gutted!”

David Punton:

“Absolute cruelty at St James Park today.

“A controversial red card for Yedlin left us battling desperately to save a point, and we looked to have pulled it off before a final lapse and a twist of the knife that was classic Newcastle United.

“That Mike Dean decided to dismiss our right back on 58 minutes was a big call  and many will say the wrong one. It was oh so costly.

“Another big talking point was some poor play from our skipper today. It is fair to say that wasn’t Lascelles’ best game for the club.

“It hurts. It stings. It’s a nightmare and it leaves us stuck on 13 points having lost  seven at home by December. It’s eye wateringly bad.

“But we have to go again and the players have to keep pushing to get us out of this relegation scrap.

“Any chance we can avoid Mike Dean taking any more of our games?”

Brian Standen:

“Unlucky. To a degree

“Possible penalty at 1-1 – in fact just seen it.  Nailed on!

“Wolves were disappointing for all their class, what class? We were as good!

“Toxic attitude at SJP not helping, one way or another fans need to to unite or it’s gonna be hard here perpetually.

“Fingers crossed changes off the pitch soon!

“Hard result to take but those staying away can have quiet smile of satisfaction.”

Jonathan Drape-Comyn:

“Stonewall red card, I don’t think any rational United fan can debate that.

“If you try to debate it, then just imagine that happening at the other end and a red card not being given.

“Mike Dean has never been friendly to us but he didn’t get much wrong today.

“Some calling for a red for an elbow on Perez, but I didn’t see anything but a natural coming together.

“Again, if that was the other way around and a red was given you would be doing your nut.

“I would much rather spend time looking at our own performance which at the end of the day wasn’t good enough.

“Five at the back didn’t work, especially with Ritchie at left wing back.

“Half-time sub makes no sense.

“No Murphy in the squad but injured Kenedy and Dummett make it onto the bench. All fair questions to be asked.

“You win some, you lose some. Two more big games coming up now for United.”

Paul Patterson:

“That should put beyond any doubt that Yedlin isn’t a full-back and we should be playing 5-3-2.”

Anthony Stafford:

“Lost interest when Yedlin got sent off and why the fuss? He pulled the guy back last man off….

“As usual  Mike look at me Dean takes centre stage and he will have plenty to get excited about tonight.

“Haven’t the foggiest what we have done to him but he is absolutely useless reffing us.

“As usual he didn’t disappoint centre-half elbows our guy no penalty and I bet there is no retrospective action either, errr didnt see it guv..

“Saying that, we cant defend, their man wondered through like a shoplifter at Tescos and you knew what was coming.

“Memo to defence, get the ball and take it to the corner, easy.

“Another 3 points down the pan, depressing.

“Back to uncle Mike’s pretend sale.

“Lord save us from this tripe…”
