Michael Owen predicts good and bad news for Newcastle at Everton
Michael Owen as been looking ahead to Wednesday night at Goodison.
The club that he has supported from being a kid, up against the team he (occasionally) played for.
Everton lost in the final seconds of Sunday’s derby match, whilst Newcastle’s fate was sealed far earlier on Saturday.
When Hernandez scored in the 11th minute the writing was on the wall.
The last 11 matches where Newcastle had conceded first they ended up losing, this West Ham match making it 12 in a row.
The blue scousers have won their last four home matches and despite Pickford’s laughable effort that lost the game against Liverpool, Marco Silva has turned their defence from one of the worst to one of the best.
Despite finishing eighth last season, Everton conceded more goals than all but five clubs, this time only four clubs have conceded less than Silva’s team.
Up against a Newcastle team that has few obvious natural goalscorers, it isn’t the best of signs.
When you add in a horrific recent record of eight defeats for Newcastle in the last nine (home and away) games against Everton, the stats really stack up.
The last time Newcastle even scored a goal at Goodison Park was over five years ago, the 30 September 2013 seeing Loic Remy grabbing an 89th minute goal but United still losing 3-2.
On the plus side, Michael Owen tips Newcastle to score tomorrow night, but still sees Everton coming out as the winning side.
The thread of hope he holds out for Rafa Benitez and the Newcastle fans, is that the home side might suffer after Sunday’s defeat after ‘they gave their all’.
Newcastle fans will know what to expect from their manager’s side, he won’t be shaken by Saturday’s defeat and will be lining up with a (hopefully) disciplined team and formation that will be able to thwart big spending Everton (Newcastle’s team against West Ham cost less than either Sigurdsson or Richarlison…) and find a goal from somewhere.
If Newcastle do get the first one then we can have real hope, if it is Everton though, then difficult not to see the situation as hopeless.
Michael Owen talking to BetVictor:
“Everton have won their last five in the PL against Newcastle without conceding a goal, but Marco Silva must make sure his side are over their derby day blues when the Magpies visit Goodison.
“Everton have made great strides under Silva so far this season, but they gave their all at Anfield on Sunday and Rafa Benitez may sense the opportunity for a shock.
“That said I expect Ademola Lookman to finally be given his head and a PL start by Silva and I expect Everton to return to winning ways.
“Tip: Everton to win and both teams to score at 13/5.”
