Michael Owen has given two predictions for Liverpool v Newcastle on Boxing Day
Michael Owen has been looking ahead to Boxing Day at Anfield.
He played for both clubs and despite scoring for fun for the scousers, especially against NUFC, they seem to care for him about as much as Newcastle fans do.
On Wednesday, it is a contest between two polar opposites.
A club where the manager has been strongly backed by the owners in an attempt to win the Premier League and compete regularly in Europe.
Facing a club where the manager is expected to make a profit in the transfer market as well as keep the club in the top tier.
It doesn’t take a genius to work out why Liverpool are flying high and Rafa Benitez has now said that it will be a miracle if Newcastle survive this season, even if Mike Ashley belatedly backs his manager in January.
The bookies make Newcastle a massive 22/1 to win and difficult to argue, because as Michael Owen points out, Newcastle haven’t won in their last 22 visits to Anfield.
Ironically/amusingly though, since Jurgen Klopp arrived at Anfield in October 2015, he has only got the better of Newcastle once.
December 2015 saw a deserved 2-0 home win for Newcastle, an own goal and one from Wijnaldum.
Then later on in that relegation season, Rafa Benitez inspired his team to come back from 2-0 down and draw 2-2 at Anfield.
October 2017 saw a ‘classic’ Joselu strike earn Newcastle a 1-1 draw at St James Park, before it was fourth time lucky for Jurgen Klopp in March when Liverpool won 2-0.
Rafa Benitez has talked a lot about ‘miracles’ in the past day or two and if Newcastle did win on Boxing Day, it could deserve that accolade, however, you can never discount Rafa Benitez masterminding a rearguard action that could produce a low scoring draw….which would be a minor miracle in itself considering the two group of players the managers have.
Michael Owen doesn’t see a hammering but a comfortable 2-0 win for the scousers and Liverpool to take the lead in the first half and cruise from there.
Michael Owen talking to BetVictor:
“Liverpool are unbeaten in their last 22 home games with Newcastle United in all competitions.
“And I expect the Reds to keep the points with Anfield sure to be rocking on the back of events at the Etihad on Saturday.
“Another clean sheet for Alisson at Molineux.
“But once again it was Virgil van Dijk whose star shone the brightest as he added a goal to another outstanding defensive performance.
“Liverpool leading half time/ and full time at 8/13
“Correct score: Liverpool to win 2-0 6/1.”
