Michael Owen comes up with startling fact about Newcastle United
Michael Owen has been looking ahead to Saturday’s game at St James Park.
A match that of course sees the first return to Tyneside of Aleksandar Mitrovic.
After a £22m (could rise to £27m) transfer in the summer, Mitro looked as though he could take the Premier League by storm.
An attacking formation helped him to five goals before the end of September and Fulham doing ok.
However, a run of three months without a win saw the manager fired and Claudio Ranieri appointed, the new boss getting Fulham only their second win of the season in his first home match, Mitro at last getting back on the scoresheet, with two in a 3-2 win over Southampton.
Following that victory though it has been back to normal, conceding lots of goals and only one point from four games in December.
This is a real game of extremes, with Michael Owen pointing out that none of the other 91 league clubs has lost more home games than Newcastle (seven) and yet Rafa’s team are 14th in the top tier.
Trust Newcastle not to do things by halves, the 10 points on the road the main reason for that relatively comfortable position.
Fulham on the other hand are disastrous away from Craven Cottage, where actually they haven’t been that great either (eight points from eight games).
However, eight defeats and one draw in nine away games is dreadful and especially when they are conceding almost three goals per game (24 in total).
Michael Owen predicts a Newcastle home win but the fact the bookies see that as likely as a toss of a coin, shows just how open this season is looking at the bottom.
Michael Owen speaking to BetVictor:
“No team has lost more home games in the top four tiers of English football than Newcastle United (7) this season.
“But I expect them to keep the points when Fulham visit St James Park at the weekend.
“The Cottagers haven’t kept a clean sheet in their last 21 PL games while United picked up a vital three points on the road at Huddersfield at the weekend.
“Jamaal Lascelles and Co will have to keep former United player Aleksandar Mitrovic (7 PL goals this season) quiet.
“But the Magpies have their own inform striker with Solomon Rondon having been involved in five of United’s last seven (4 goals 1 assist) league goals.
“Rafa Benitez will return to Anfield on Boxing Day and I expect his Newcastle side to go there on the back of successive home (ED: Huddersfield was actually away…) league wins.
“Tip: Newcastle to win at 1/1.”
