Mark Lawrenson last predicted Liverpool to lose on 15 May 2016…Surprising table ahead of Newcastle match
It is now 31 months since Mark Lawrenson last predicted Liverpool would lose a Premier League match.
Ahead of the Boxing Day clash with Newcastle, the former Liverpool player has a record of forecasting in these past 94 PL games 61 wins, 33 draws and no defeats, for his old club.
All a bit embarrassing really when you are paid for your ‘expert’ opinion.
The last time he did suggest Liverpool could lose, was bizarrely against West Brom.
The final game of the 2015/16 season saw the scousers draw 1-1 at The Hawthorns, whilst he also forecast another Liverpool defeat that season which ended up coming true, a 3-2 loss at Southampton.
However, since that 2015/16 season Mark Lawrenson hasn’t been able to bring himself to forecast a defeat for his beloved Liverpool.
The whole of the 2016/17 and 2017/18 seasons, and the first half of this current 2018/19 one, not seeing a single predicted defeat.
However, ironically, in a season where Liverpool have stretched four points clear at the top before facing Newcastle, this is how Mark Lawrenson has seen the season go, with this being the PL table based on his predictions so far (including against Newcastle today), table courtesy of My Football Facts:
As you can see, Lawrenson actually has Liverpool trailing by 10 points back in third place, with strangely, Man Utd in second. Newcastle up in eighth is also a one ‘slightly’ wide of the mark, just a shame Mark Lawrenson isn’t correct a little more often with his predictions….
This is how the real PL table looks ahead of the Boxing Day matches:
The BBC Sport pundit has gone for a 2-0 win (predictably) to Liverpool and despite winning seven and only drawing once against Man City, the scousers have only scored a relatively low 18 goals at home. When I say low, that takes into account their attacking strength and how they have dominated this season.
Rafa Benitez may get some encouragement with Fulham causing Liverpool problems last month, the home side eventually winning 2-0 but Fulham having some good chances and Mitrovic having a goal seemingly wrongly disallowed before the reds went straight up the other end and took the lead.
Klopp’s team also only won 1-0 at Huddersfield.
Suggesting that if Rafa’s players could only somehow find a goal from somewhere, there could be a glimpse of hope, with Liverpool not maybe as free scoring (yet!) as their talent/dominance would suggest.
The Liverpool boss will also have in mind what looks a more difficult game against Arsenal on Saturday, as he manages his squad.
Mark Lawrenson talking to BBC Sport:
“Rafael Benitez returns to Anfield and you know how the Newcastle manager is going to set his side up.
“The Magpies will make it difficult for Liverpool but Reds boss Jurgen Klopp is able to change the shape of his team to a 4-2-3-1 when he wants to break stubborn sides down.
“That allows Klopp to get an extra attack-minded midfielder into his team, which is what I can see him doing here.
“Liverpool look very strong at the moment, even when Klopp rotates his side, and he is able to change games from the bench.
“I am going for a home win to keep the Reds clear at the top.
“Prediction is Liverpool 2 Newcastle 0.”
