Jurgen Klopp Newcastle press conference quotes – Hopes to break down Rafa’s ‘Not so cool’ back five formation
Jurgen Klopp must be loving it at the minute.
A rollercoaster ride in the Champions League but survived a late scare to qualify for the last 16 earlier this month.
As for the Premier League, a bit of a dream this past weekend ahead of Christmas.
A very professional dominant 2-0 victory at Wolves, then sat back and watched Man City implode 3-2 at home.
Liverpool now four points clear at the top and facing a Newcastle side who haven’t won at Anfield in the Premier League since 1994.
Jurgen Klopp is long-term friends with Rafa Benitez and has a lot of respect for him, as do the Liverpool fans according to the current boss.
Klopp says that the scousers don’t forget ‘people who did an outstanding job here’ with Rafa very much in that category.
Rafa Benitez looked to have hit a bit of a wall this weekend in terms of fading hopes at Newcastle, despite being five points clear of the bottom three, Rafa has said it will be a ‘miracle’ if Newcastle stay up this season – a very tough eight game match schedule up next with Liverpool the first of those.
Everybody knows what the problem is at St James Park and Jurgen Klopp declares: ‘I don’t know too much about Newcastle…although I know people are not happy with the amount they are (not!) spending.’
Jurgen Klopp speaking at his pre-Newcastle press conference on Monday morning:
“This club is famous in not forgetting people who did an outstanding job here.
“Not only Rafa Benitez, but he is still in the Premier League and he still lives in the area, and he has become a proper Scouser.
“I like him.
“He is a fantastic manager and I’m happy for him that he gets this reception – Liverpudlians don’t forget too easily.
“I have known him for a long time before I came to Liverpool and he has always done brilliant jobs and won different things.
“This makes him a special person.
“I don’t know too much about Newcastle…although I know people are not happy with the amount they are (not!) spending.
“Looks likely Newcastle could play 5-4-1.
“So it means we have to be patient.
“Newcastle give us a lot to think about, the crosses with Rondon in the box.
“We are really thinking about Newcastle now, then we can sleep twice and Arsenal stand in front of us.
“I don’t think for a second about January and February, I only think about Newcastle.
“That is all that is on my mind.
“Just so long as the boys follow in this path, everything will be fine.
“We need to stay angry, to stay greedy, that is what we need to do against Newcastle.
“It will be the third time in a row we will be up against a back five.
“Rafa can organise a defence really well, not so cool…but good for him, but we will try (to break it down).”
