Jamaal Lascelles talks about playing against ‘nightmare’ Aleksandar Mitrovic and how he feels sorry for Newcastle fans
Jamaal Lascelles has been talking ahead of Saturday’s match with Fulham.
It was always destined to be a big sideshow to the match and the Newcastle Captain as talked about the upcoming challenge of facing Aleksandar Mitrovic.
Lascelles talking his old teammate up and stating he can be a ‘nightmare’ to play against but stating that this is what the Newcastle players are paid to do.
The NUFC Captain also revealing that at times he feels sorry for the fans: ‘Hopefully can get a good win for the (Newcastle) fans because they deserve it. At times I do feel sorry for them (Newcastle supporters) but that’s football.’
Whilst the Newcastle supporters (and players?) dream of Mike Ashley selling the club and some better quality signings to be added in January, there is also of course the more urgent matter of trying to keep out of the bottom three.
The win at Huddersfield ensures that Newcastle can’t be in the relegation zone at Christmas as they are four points clear and Jamaal Lascelles sees a much better situation this time: ‘Last season we turned it around January/February time because we were real far down the bottom, we managed to turn it around real quick. We are not in that situation that we were in last year.’
However, reality is that after 17 matches last season, Newcastle were 16th with 15 points and this time Rafa’s team are 14th with 16 points.
Only one point more than last season and the league position only looking a bit better because of struggling teams below them.
Bottom line though is that a defeat for Newcastle and other results went against them, NUFC could reach Xmas only one point above the relegation zone and a tough set of fixtures to come, including playing five of the ‘big six’ in the next seven PL matches.
Jamaal Lascelles speaking to NUFC TV:
“The Wolves game wasn’t good enough.
“We knew going to Huddersfield was going to be a hard game, a massive game for us, getting a clean sheet and a win was really important.
“Gives us momentum heading in the right direction again.
“We have got a lot of games coming up and all about building momentum and keeping it going.
“I was pleased with the boys, they did really well, worked hard all game.
“Huddersfield did have a lot of possession but in terms of chances created, they didn’t really do much of that.
“Everybody was putting their body on the line.
“The Huddersfield win was massive at this time of year and a little gap forming.
“All about keeping our heads down and trying to do the same thing (against Fulham).
“Last season we turned it around January/February time because we were real far down the bottom, we managed to turn it around real quick.
“We are not in that situation that we were in last year.
“Fulham are bottom but they have got some good players, obviously Mitro is a good striker and a good midfield.
“We just want to make sure we play in the right way, the right attitude, Mitro’s a good striker: he’s smart, he is physical, he can be a nightmare for centre-backs, but we are all paid to do our jobs.
“Hopefully can get a good win for the (Newcastle) fans because they deserve it.
“At times I do feel sorry for them (Newcastle supporters) but that’s football.”
