Yesterday, viewing Liverpool 4 Newcastle United 0, was an awakening of sorts for me.

I hadn’t watched a Newcastle match in months and seriously, at the moment our football is as exciting as fat Sam’s hoof it to the big lad strategy.

Usually we kind of turn it on for the big teams and pull off the odd good result, like against Chelsea in recent years.

Boxing Day was terrible. It wasn’t just bad, not simply a struggling team against one hopefully winning the league in good form, but absolutely awful.

Our captain couldn’t head the ball or mark a man to save his life. It was his fault in the first place they got the opening goal, instead of heading out for a corner he heads it to their player standing in front of goal.

Jamaal Lascelles consistently out of position and looked two yards off the pace.

Muto worked hard and chased and chased, shame Joselu just lost nearly everything, didn’t look even the slightest threat and seemed not to care!

Hayden in a rare appearance, actually looked like our best midfielder, running, probing and breaking up play.

Diame was looking lost most of the time and honestly I can’t wait for a new defensive midfielder.

Richie after a few good crosses was awful, putting the ball out on the opposite side of the pitch for throw ins or goal-kicks. He’s an ok Championship player and a workhorse but doesn’t belong in the Premier League.

Longstaff was great when he came on and I hope he gets more time on the pitch, along with Elias Sorensen who is banging the goals in for the reserves, as they seem to be our only hope come January.

If I haven’t mentioned a player it’s because I can’t remember their contributions.

Seriously, our squad needs a huge overhaul and fresh blood or we will be relegated and Rafa gone (he may still go regardless at the end of the season).

I’ll go back to lurking after this, and watching the results come in.

If Newcastle United don’t significantly strengthen in January, I can’t see how we get out of this.
