Former top referee rules on Liverpool v Newcastle controversial incident

Dermot Gallagher reviews controversial decisions in the Premier League after each round of games, on behalf of Sky Sports, and has given his calls on a Liverpool v Newcastle match incident.

The incident in question was two minutes into the second half.

Mohamed Salah running at Jamaal Lascelles and into the box, then falling to the ground as Paul Dummett touched his arm from behind.

Two decisions to be made, was it a penalty and should Mohamed Salah have been punished with a retrospective two match ban for cheating?

Dermot Gallagher thinks the referee got the decision correct by giving a penalty AND that Salah didn’t deserve a ban for cheating.

Up to a point I can understand him going with the no retrospective ban but I fail to see how anybody watching the TV replays could think that was a penalty.

Surely nobody would think that the Dummett contact should have been enough for the Liverpool player to end up on the ground.

Dermot Gallagher speaking to Sky Sports:

Incident:

“Paul Dummett pulls back Mo Salah, with referee Graham Scott pointing to the spot.”

Dermot Gallagher verdict:

“Correct decision, penalty.”

Dermot Gallagher says:

“I thought it was a penalty.

“He [Dummett] caught him by the arm and there was enough there.

“At the speed people move, you do not need much… (to go over). His (Dummett’s)  reaction is that he almost gives up on the decision, like ‘why have I done that?’

(There were some reports today claiming Salah could face retrospective disciplinary action from The FA similar to that handed down to Everton’s Oumar Niasse and West Ham’s Manuel Lanzini last season.

However, Gallagher explains why those two cases are different.)

“He [Niasse] is going forward and actually initiates the contact, whereas with the Dummett and Salah one, Dummett takes him from behind. Whereas Niasse sees the leg and then goes into it.

“The referee is in the wrong position here – because he has a complete down the barrel view, he thinks Erik Pieters fouls him [Lanzini], but he takes his leg away.”
