Former top referee rules on Huddersfield v Newcastle controversial incident

Dermot Gallagher reviews controversial decisions in the Premier League after each round of games, on behalf of Sky Sports, and has given his calls on a Huddersfield v Newcastle match incident.

The incident in question was during the first half when the score was still 0-0.

Jamaal Lascelles appeared to have the job of marking Huddersfield’s big lump of a centre-forward Laurent Depoitre throughout the game.

The home striker drifted out to the wing and Lascelles launched a bit of a bizarre challenge on him.

I’m still not sure whether he was even trying to clatter him, or whether he just ended up making a clumsy effort to put the ball out of play.

Either way, Dermot Gallagher thinks the referee got the decision correct, a yellow not a red card.

The man reason for his decision is because the challenge wasn’t a case of Jamaal Lascelles going in studs first.

The former top ref saying the fact the incident was at the very edge of the pitch made it look worse than it really was.

Dermot Gallagher speaking to Sky Sports:

“Jamaal Lascelles caught Laurent Depoitre out on the wing with a late scissor challenge.

“The ball was already out of play and he received a yellow card.”

Dermot Gallagher verdict:

“Correct decision.”

Dermot Gallagher says:

“It isn’t a red because he goes without his studs

“He catches him high and off the field which is not a good thing.

“It looks worse because of the hoardings.”
