Former top referee rules on Everton v Newcastle controversial incident

Dermot Gallagher reviews controversial decisions in the Premier League after each round of games, on behalf of Sky Sports, and has given his call on a Everton v Newcastle match incident.

With 19 minutes on the clock Mohamed Diame made a challenge deep in his own half.

The ball broke to another Newcastle player (Schar I think), who instantly spread it out wide to Murphy on the left wing.

The winger carried it from halfway, outpaced his man and put in a perfect left foot cross, Salomon Rondon supplying the finish.

However, I have heard seen some moaning from Everton fans and players that the goal should not have stood.

They claim there was a foul in the build-up, by Diame I think.

I couldn’t see much wrong and neither can Dermot Gallagher.

His verdict is that it was a correct decision by referee Lee Mason.

Dermot Gallagher saying that it is all a bit feeble to be moaning about something that happened three quarters of the way up the pitch, with ‘so much still to do’ before Rondon put it into the net.

The former top ref even goes so far as to say that if VAR had been in operation, the Newcastle goal would still have counted. Gallagher stating that they would ‘never go back this far’ in any move, as there was still so much left to do.

Dermot Gallagher speaking to Sky Sports:

Incident:

“Salomon Rondon opens the scoring for Newcastle but was there a foul in the build-up to the move?”

Dermot Gallagher verdict:

“Correct decision.”

Dermot Gallagher says:

“Just play on.

“There’s so much still to do.

“People might say would VAR rule this out, but VAR would never go back this far, there was too much to do.”
