Danny Murphy looked back on Newcastle’s three goal defeat to West Ham and saw one ‘obvious’ difference between the two teams.

The BBC Sport pundit saying the ‘final third’ was the defining thing on the day.

Newcastle had more possession, corners and shots…but it was West Ham who created the better chances and of course, scored the goals.

Rafa Benitez made reference after the game to the money spent, or not spent, by the two clubs.

It was there for all to see at St James Park on Saturday.

Whilst Rafa Benitez was forced to make a profit of over £20m+ on transfer deals this summer and look for frees, loans and bargains, Manuel Pellegrini was given £100m to spend and ended up with a net spend of around £90m.

Felipe Anderson took Newcastle, and in particular DeAndre Yedlin, apart yesterday, West Ham paid around £36m to Lazio for him in the summer.

Anderson, Arnautovic and Hernandez cost between £70m and £80m, whilst Rondon, Atsu, Ki, Perez and Kenedy have cost Newcastle £7m or £8m.

With Mike Ashley starving the manager of funds, Danny Murphy declared on Match of The Day that: ‘If Rafa Benitez keeps them up, it is another great season (in the circumstances).’

Every penny indeed…

Danny Murphy:

“In the first half Newcastle were not that bad.

“They had chances.

“But there was an obvious difference in quality in that final third.

And Rafa Benitez has a point…it is the difference in type of player, with the money that he has been given.

“If Rafa Benitez keeps them up, it is another great season (in the circumstances).”

Jermaine Jenas:

“Felipe Anderson gave DeAndre Yedlin a torrid afternoon.

“He didn’t know what to do with him.

“He (Anderson) was toying with Yedlin by the end. It was almost like.

“He actually should have got more than one, Yedlin couldn’t handle him…”

  • X,WHY,Y MAN.

You cannot argue with Murphy given the situation that exists at the club but it is an utterly depressing scenario.
All Ashley wants is to constantly assemble a team of rag tag misfits who cost very little who an inspirational manager can get to overachieve for him every season !

    • Paul Patterson

That’s why he thought he was onto a winner with Pardew and Carr. Buy low + sell high = 5th place. Doesn’t work like that though. That’s why many class the 5th place as a fluke.

    • Foggy

He was just fortunate to get Rafa so I don’t think it was planned.

But ask yourself, If you hated the north east and its people like the fat man does, and you could makes millions out of them a t the same time while sitting back laughing at their puny efforts to stop it, wouldn’t you keep it going as long as possible? He will I have no doubt and has no intention to sell.

Fickle fans that say f**k all are laughable. 50,000 fans chanting ‘F**K OFF ASHLEY’ match in and match out would shift the c**t. Never going to happen, so you get what you deserve. I don’t pay money and this has gone on for so long now it doesn’t register as a passion anymore. Win, lose or draw, I simply switch off until the next match. I am at work here in Vancouver for the Eveton match which is not televised and will simply have to look the result up. Once upon a time I would have been gutted to at least not getting to listen to it live. Thanks to the fat c**t, I really couldn’t careless and what I see is what I get when I check. Back to win, lose or draw it really won’t change whatever I have planned for the rest of the day. Passion is gone and at 52 will not likely return. Very sad. Thanks , Mike.

I do indeed. Thank you for the site to try and will definitely give it a go. I am a postie so will be out walking around aimlessly during the Eveton match with no access to a computer. Cheers once again and let’s see what Wednesday brings.

    Same patter, different season.
the best you can hope for under the Rat is a relegation fight year on year.

  • Tweed Mag

He is just saying what we all know. My 10 year old nephew could have said that. Without Rafa we would have gone down last season, presuming we had been promoted the season before. There is a belief amongst some fans that Ashley will do as he likes no matter what. So just give up, sit back and moan? No – show some pride and get the message over. How many of those fans, who could not be bothered to wait 11 minutes, then left early after a dismal display?

    • LA toon

Totally agree, should have organised 79 minute walk out. The support the team brigade will be doing that with regular occurance, even when we are in the Championship. Did not hear much support yesterday, only groans. The club is more important than a team of players that would leave, at a drop of a hat, for an extra 10 grand a week. #boycott Wolves.

      • Foggy

Waste of time. He sitting laugh at this at home and taking the p!ss out of us with his cockney hangers on. Not living in Newcastle is the problem as he can’t be reached.

The only way to get rid of a cancer like him is to address it where it lives. At his own home. And we are unlikely to do that.

    • nufcslf

Most of the ground from what I saw on the telly.

  • Wezza

    If we survive then what?
Just another year of 17th and above and FCB taking millions.

  • graham18

Murhpy is missing the point.Rafa should not be in this position of having no money to spend in the 1st place. The FCB has completely ruined nufc for his own benefit but it can only go on for so long.

  • Albert Stubbins

My mother in law could take yedlin apart ffs. Players of far less quality that Anderson will tear him a new one this season. As for manquino. A traffic cone would have more of a positive impact.

    • nufcslf

Yedlin couldn’t cross a ball to save his life. But like in a lot of none minded football sheep that go to matches they see the effort he puts in to get there and not the final product at both ends of the pitch. Useless for the most part, but right up fat Cashley’s alley and the thick c** ts that put up with this pathetic excuse of a football club..
