The Newcastle team v Wolves has just been confirmed.

Rafa Benitez looking to keep momentum going after the battling draw at Everton.

The Magpies having picked up 11 points from the last 18.

Schar, Manquillo, Murphy all drop out of the team.

Clark, Perez, Ritchie all come in.

Fabian Scharr is suspended, whilst Manquillo drops to the bench and Murpy disappears totally from the matchday squad.

Kenedy only makes the bench whilst it was reported shortly before the team was announced that Shelvey is injured once again.

With Clark coming back in, we could be keeping the three/five man defensive shape, though he has played as an orthodox left-back as well before.

This is who Rafa Benitez starts with:

Dubravka, Yedlin, Fernandez, Lascelles, Clark, Ritchie, Ki, Diame, Atsu, Perez, Rondon

The subs:

Woodman, Manquillo, Dummett, Kenedy, Longstaff, Muto, Joselu

Compare with the fans choice here.

  • Longstaff is the only central midfielder on the bench! He has to get some game time today. I also expect Muto and Kenedy coming on as subs if there are no injuries.
    HWTL!

  • panther

That headline fills me with dread

  • Kevin Christie

Really don’t know what Rafa sees in Atsu. Would use Ritchie and Yedlin as wingbacks and put another body in the centre instead. Annoying to see Ayoze in ahead of Muto too and very disappointed not to see Kenedy back. I suppose he’s not quite fully fit yet – hopefully he can come on and make a difference in the second half. No Shelvey on the bench?! Also, no Murphy either – thought he did OK midweek. Hard for him to develop if he can’t get a run in the side…

Anyway, hope Rafa proves me wrong!

  • Billmag

Oops Shelvey not in the squad wonder if he’s spat his dummy out.

  • Chris-Chapple

Steamroller runs over Perez Rafa hopes he will be fit for the next match.
Muto making progress larnin Geordie expected to start on match day 37.

  • Ken

    WTF Perez and Atsu

    • fistsofsteel2

Because Perez is the one player we have who gets in the right places to worry the opposition. He’s one of our best players…and hey ho, he’s scored.

  • Leicester Mag

What a load of cr$p defending

    • Chris-Chapple

All over the place at the back, schoolboy stuff.

  • GlasgowMag

    Great goal!!

  • Leicester Mag

Brilliant from Rondon on 2 counts

    • Chris-Chapple

      Unlucky with the free kick

      • Leicester Mag

Absolutely and then cross was great

        • Chris-Chapple

Top class he’s looking the real deal

  • Chris-Chapple

Good header from Perez but what’s with the fingers in the ears again

    • Rabid Dog

It’s because he is a kock…. good goal though.

  • DC1964

Similar header to the one he got against Watford!

  • GlasgowMag

    Rondon looks a handful today!!

    • Chris-Chapple

      He’s sharp

  • Chris-Chapple

Lascelles looks lost on the right of the back three

    • mentalman

He looks way off the pace to

  • glassjawsh-got-banned

Its finishes like that that make Perez so infuriating. He’s capable of pulling off the remarkable and completely mucking up the mundane all at the same time

    • Chris-Chapple

      Trouble is he’s to inconsistent

      • glassjawsh-got-banned

Absolutely. He’ll disappear for another 6-8 matches after this.

  • glassjawsh-got-banned

Convinced Shelvey is about to be sold now. Ashley found his replacement on a free and is licking his chops over pocketing the profits.

    • Chris-Chapple

I wouldn’t put it past him and that goes for Lascelles as well as Lejeune is nearing fitness

    • 5floorshigh

yep I reckon he is on the market in Jan

  • Rabid Dog

You can tell Ritchie has been assigned defensive duties, he’s hardly in the game.

    • Chris-Chapple

Last time he played there he was rubbish
Wolves are there for the taking

  • mentalman

Ref needs to get a grip

    • Chris-Chapple

      Just a bit

  • Kevin Christie

Lascelles is all over the shop so far! Rondón has been immense, fair play to him. Wolves are there for the taking but we need Atsu off and Muto or Kenedy on to support Rondón. Good finish from Ayoze. He’s playing a bit better than usual but he needs to make sure he tracks back or Wolves could come up with a second. Let’s see if we can manage a second half goal and maybe nick the three points! Fingers crossed! :-)

  • Chris-Chapple

We need Rafa to tell the boys to go at them, they’re there for the taking

  • Peaky

Got an awful feeling Moutinho will come on and have a big say in the second half…hope I’m wrong.

    • Chris-Chapple

      You always spoil things
      😁

      • Peaky

        🤣😂

  • 5floorshigh

need all 3 points today, got to step it up for second half…Wolves have been awful and are there to beat

  • ScreamStevie

Great goal from Perez. There’s few other in the team could have scored that. He’s technically a very good player but recently lacking in confidence. Course it doesn’t help when fans slag him off on his twitter feed and jeer him from the touchline!

    • Chris-Chapple

Do you watch the games, the guy has one decent game in 6

      • ScreamStevie

Do you actually read what you are replying to or just see the word Perez and go into slag mode?

        • glassjawsh-got-banned

he’s both our only player capable of those sorts of things and maddeningly inconsistent.

  • Billmag

What the hell was Yedlin doing walking away when the cross came in for there goal.?

    • mentalman

      Yedlin never deals with crosses

  • mentalman

    Is rafa for real

  • glassjawsh-got-banned

not. one of Jamal’s better games… woof

    • mentalman

He’s never been the most mobile but he looks like he’s running in treacle

    • Chris-Chapple

      He’s having a mare

      • Peaky

House hunting in his head……on The Wirral….

        • Chris-Chapple

          Or London

  • glassjawsh-got-banned

    welp. That settles that then.

  • Chris-Chapple

Bent ref it was a yellow

    • Leazes.

No…. last man….correct decision Yedlin didn’t have any pace to catch him. professional foul.

      • Chris-Chapple

Lascelles slowed down when Yedlin fouled he may well have made up the ground

  • GlasgowMag

He wasn’t the last man terrible reffing!!

    • mentalman

Had that been the other way round we’d have expected a red

      • GlasgowMag

Mabye so but do we ever get decisions like that!!!

        • mentalman

          Occasionally

          • GlasgowMag

            Occasionally never!!

  • ScreamStevie

Backs to the wall and try and hold out for draw

  • steve

Why the hell didn’t we just go to a back four when Fernandez went off.

    • mentalman

      Why wasn’t dummett brought on

      • steve

        That would be too obvious.

  • mentalman

    Ian cathro at wolves now

  • glassjawsh-got-banned

I think Lascelles has had enough good games that we can overlook a howler or two. But this is hard to watch.

    • GlasgowMag

Just back from injury but he is having a mare!!

    • mentalman

Fans have turned on lascelles since there was talk of him questioning rafa

      • steve

If he did question Rafa over playing in a back three then this performance shows why he was concerned.

  • Chris-Chapple

We can still win this game

    • Leazes.

      technically correct stupid comment

  • mentalman

    Atsu doing well getting fouled

  • GlasgowMag

To be fair to Atsu playing really well!!

    • mentalman

it has been his best performance so far this season

  • DC1964

Our final ball and set piece play has been awful second half!

  • Peaky

    Christ….someone has hurt Perez’s gel….

    • Chris-Chapple

I’m getting hammered off leazes I’m away to walk the dog 🐕

  • GlasgowMag

    Blatant elbow on Perez!!

    • mentalman

That should be a retrospective ban

  • glassjawsh-got-banned

elbow straight to the face (Perez wearing a black and white shirt), play on!

    • Leicester Mag

Muppets on sky doing 3 wise monkeys act

  • DC1964

    Dubravka excellent again today

    • Chris-Chapple

      Brilliant

  • Chris-Chapple

    Joselu is on

    • Leicester Mag

Now is the time to walk the dog

      • Chris-Chapple

        😁

        • Leicester Mag

Come to think of it your dog better than that trucking flanker

  • GlasgowMag

The Hoss is just strolling about where down to 10 men man!!!

    • Peaky

Listening on 5 Live….Waddle is going bonkers about The Hoss…

      • Leicester Mag

        Him and mankini truckin 🐴💩

    • Leazes.

Walk, trot, canter or gallop, they don’t stroll.

  • WildBill

It’s the hope that kills you

  • Peaky

    FFS Man….had enough….again.

    • Chris-Chapple

      7th home defeat

      • DC1964

        Just s**t!

      • WildBill

7th in 9 home games. Disgraceful

        • Chris-Chapple

Should have gone to a back four

      • Peaky

        Unacceptable

        • Chris-Chapple

We always seem to throw it away

  • DC1964

    Aghhh!!!!

  • steve

Some inexplicable decisions from Rafa again today, Wolves were poor today and we’ve handed them a victory.

    • DC1964

We just couldn’t keep the ball and kept giving it away. Can’ t think of one flowing move in the whole game!

    • Kneebotherm8

Wolves played against 10 men for nearly half the game……the 10 men made them look poor…

      • Chris-Chapple

Back line isn’t working we should play a flat back four

  • Tino o

    They are [email protected] pathetic!

  • Billmag

The Captain’s had an effing mare.

    • GToon

He was useless today wasn’t he. He looked worse the more time he had on the ball!

      • Billmag

        👍👍

      • Chris-Chapple

        He’s a central defender he can’t play in a back 3

      • Billmag

He was backing off and backing off I was screaming block him give a free kick away if you have to but don’t let him run into the penalty area.

  • Andy Mac

I put that down to Rafa. He had Dummet on the bench. He could easily have gone to a back four without switching Yedlin to CB. As for Manquillo – Why ?

    • mentalman

Dummet could have gone in as a cb

  • Leicester Mag

When your bench is a pile of ham shank what can you expect

    • Chris-Chapple

Exposed on both flanks the sooner Dummetts back the better

    • Tino o

Exactly our bench transformes us to a league one side pathetic [email protected] sick of supporting this [email protected]!

  • GToon

Wolves never look like scoring and yet they win it. Love the way Joselu comes on for the last couple of minutes and plays like he’s played for five hours. Defend from the front. ☹️

  • Billmag

The Hose had 4 touches and lost it 4 times.

    • steve

Rondon was still moving well and holding the ball up, absolutely no need to replace him.

    • Leicester Mag

He’s a trucking Sunday league player

    • DC1964

The passing from the whole team was pathetic, couldn’t string a move together all game

      • Billmag

Wolves were terrible so where does that leave us.

        • DC1964

2 poor teams out there today

    • Peaky

Knackers yard for the Hoss….even Shergar still has more life in him….and he was corned beef all those years ago…

      • Billmag

        😀😀🐎🐎

    • Phil Yare

people say ‘that’s what you get for 5-6m but a non-league player can show more desire to win the ball or retain it in the first place. waste of space and money

  • ScreamStevie

When half your defence is Championship standard (Manquillo and Clark) it was only a matter of time.

    • steve

Don’t play them then, if Dummett isn’t fit to play 45 minutes why is he on the bench.

  • Rabid Dog

Well at least no one can blame protesting as the reason we lost.

  • X,WHY,Y MAN.

I wonder where this lot rank in worst players to ever pull on a Black ‘n’ White shirt ?

    • ScreamStevie

      Sadly, not even close

    • Leicester Mag

      Wait till next year

    • JohnCornwell’sHair

Nowhere near sadly, i’ve seen far far worse in black and white.

  • robbersdog

Joselu must be the only player who can come on to the pitch for the last few minutes and immediately look absolutely knackered. It’s like he’s got lead weights in his boots.

    • ScreamStevie

Whether that’s true or not, it wasn’t his fault that we conceded.

      • Billmag

        He kept giving possession away.

    • Phil Yare

i’d happily trade him for a pack of bibs

      • robbersdog

        One cone.

        • Phil Yare

another cone for manquillo and then we’ve got a goal for the training pitch

      • Tino o

That’s why he is still here no one has paid the asking price of a pack of bibs and an orange cone

    • Leazes.

If you could pick a adjective for our forwards it would be ‘lumbering’ except for Perez who is ‘insulting’…..

    • Kneebotherm8

      Deep sea diving boots.

  • 5floorshigh

strange team selection, even stranger subs, Lascelles abysmal, the Hoss should never get near the first team again…and no sign of a boycott

    • robbersdog

Lascelles excels in a centre-back pairing, but he’s a fish out of water in a back three. Now we know why Southgate doesn’t pick him – he can’t adapt.

      • Chris-Chapple

        👍

      • mentalman

He looked a lot better in the centre of the 3

        • Chris-Chapple

That’s his position not on the right

      • 5floorshigh

he’s a decent defender and captain but not a very good footballer, when all our CD’s are fit he would not be my first choice

    • Leazes.

Yedlin was off pace too…. but apart from that…..I guess we have the press, club and owner we deserve!……well not me personally, I’m boycotting but I guess they’re all happy with it.

  • IanyPiny

Every one of you who went today got exactly what was deserved, and every one of you booed at the end, you are too far gone for hope.

    • Chris-Chapple

As long as they turn up there’s no chance of Fatty leaving.

      • Phil Yare

think they made 10 steps backwards with that decision, or 52,000 to be precise

        • Chris-Chapple

The trolls will be out soon

          • IanyPiny

My previous was a reply to you mate, I hope before I die I can go to a game and truly support, feeling united again

        • IanyPiny

The trolls can do as they wish, we’ve just proven we’ve already killed ourselves

  • Tony English

    Yedlin had a mare.
Atsu best game I’ve seen him play.
    Ki impressed.
Clear elbow on Perez – commentators want shooting.
Kenedy, with fresh legs needed to follow the runner for that goal.

    Disappointing, deserved the win.

    • Benmagpie

Agreed. Perez wa assaulted but had a great game, as did atsu and Rondon.

  • Mirandinha9

Lots of negative comments about the players on the pitch today, though, Cashley is the root cause of the problems and the 50,000 sheep who attended today, also need to have a look at themselves. Every fortnight they attend witnessing the dross put in front of them, but, they keep turning up. Cashley loves that and continues to put such mediocrity in front of them.

    • mentalman

Mike ashley didn’t decide to play a defensively poor full back as a centre back

      • Chris-Chapple

He has little choice with that squad

        • steve

He had multiple options in this situation and went for the wrong one.

        • mentalman

we could have either brought dummett on in the middle to keep the same formation of switch to a back 4

  • Peaky

    Was the FatTwat there ??

    • Leicester Mag

Nope gone to thank the fat lad in red for the early present of 50000 🐏

      • Chris-Chapple

He did a job on them and they fell for it

        • Leicester Mag

          Again and again and…

    • Chris-Chapple

      No, he’s abroad somewhere

      • Kneebotherm8

Sorting out the club sale…………just like he did the same time last year….

        • Chris-Chapple

          We should be so lucky

          • Kneebotherm8

            Groundhog Day again….

    • Billmag

No he’s on holiday Peaky that’s what he does when the transfer window comes around.

  • Tino o

The magpie group are happy with the turnout

    • Phil Yare

a stupid decision, back to square one

      • Tino o

        Was it theirs to make?

        • Phil Yare

the magpie group cancelled the boycott

          • Tino o

            I do know that

          • steve

There was never going to be a boycott, cancellation or not, buyout rumour or not.

          • Tino o

If they had of kept out it would have took a few thousand off the gate. And do you mean buy out [email protected] not rumour!

          • steve

That’s optimistic, last week’s 11th minute walk in seemed to be more like a couple hundred, and if those boycotting were season ticket holders it wouldn’t affect the gate reported.

          • Tino o

Time to give up then beg Ashley to increase the prices sell anything decent we have (which is very little or nothing) and enjoy the misery of supporting this club!

    • Leazes.

The crowd made all the difference.

      • Tino o

The twelfth man or the eleventh when yedlin went tenth when the hoss came on

  • Mirandinha9

Home record of won 2, lost 7. Just stinks of Cashley!

  • Leicester Mag

Our bench would embarrass Shiney Row raggy rsed rovers.

  • Billmag

I love Rafa but for me he got things wrong today, Matty is absolutely wasted in the position he where he played today, and sometimes you can over complicate things.

    • Chris-Chapple

      Same applies to Lascelles

  • Kneebotherm8

Perez would have got a penalty for that assault in the box next season with VAR………….and Boly a red card………10 v 10 might have been a different game…

  • X,WHY,Y MAN.

Individually we have some of the worst lacking in any kind of skill players for many a year.
The side of 2009 that went down was packed with quality but just couldn’t play as a team, But this lot across the board are as bad as bad can be.

Although I don’t think we at the Bobby Shinton stage yet, But is on the way with Fat Boy involved !

    • GToon

Ashley would have sold Bobby Shinton !!!

  • Kneebotherm8

Make no mistake Wolves got all the important decisions today…….no wonder Benitez is asking for VAR asap……

    • Kneebotherm8

He’s fckn seething in that interview……….having a job, verbally,to keep his hands off the referee…..he did well and I think he saved himself another FA fine.

      • Leazes.

Institutionalised bias…….When did United last have a man advantage?….

…..having said that…..this was deserved but a lot of decisions went against us as well.

        • Kneebotherm8

The two major decisions went against us………should Yedlin have got a yellow?…………..should we have had a penalty and Boly a red,in the process?…….it was hardly noticeable that Wolves played with an extra man,or the fact they spent mega millions more than Ashley allowed us to in the transfer market……

          • Leazes.

I said straight away red, he was essentially the last man and was totally pedestrian…. couldn’t have been anything else… we’ll see what MOTD make of it.

          • JohnCornwell’sHair

It was a deserved red i’m afraid, but Perez got a full elbow in the face that went unpunished.

          • Kneebotherm8

Perez definitely took an elbow in the face…………….definitely a pen and probably a red for Boly………a pen for us and 10 v 10 for the rest of the game…….would Wolves have won from that position?……..

          • Billmag

Depends on who is on, the Beeb especially Chappers is very biased against us.

          • mentalman

Definite red for yedlin, I’ve not seen where the ref was for the boly perez incident. If he had a seen it he should have stopped play for a potential head injury, if he didn’t then it should be a retrospective ban

          • Billmag

He said (ref)to Perez that the ball hit him in the face, replays showed it was an elbow.

        • Billmag

You are being proved correct Leazes as far as institutionalised bias is concerned but alas it isn’t something new.

  • Stephen Paylor

Lascelles lost concentration on the first and allowed their player to pull off the back. On the second he backed off way too much and was punished. Atsu needs to be driving at defenders more or does he lack any real pace? Perez was maybe the best I have seen him. Its quite simple really, plenty of fight, well organised but short on quality in too many areas.

    • mentalman

Lack of communication between yedlin and lascelles caused the first goal

    • Billmag

Lascelles lost concentration on Wed night when Everton got there goal.

  • Mrkgw

On way back south after that. Awful game. Dean made some poor decisions and in my opinion, Yedlin should have been yellowed and not sent off. Joselu for Rondon was a poor call also. What a mess eh.

    • Kenny

      Safe journey

      • Mrkgw

Cheers matey . Gutted at leaving my native NE but had a great weekend – two big nights out, and stay in the Sandman. Just the result. All the best.

        • Kenny

          👌

    • Billmag

For me mate the sending off was a definite, the elbow on Perez in the box for me was a penalty and a red card but it’s all about opinions.

      • Kenny

The red was correct for Yedlin.

  • Kenny

My 3 mates kept their word & didn`t go to the match they just did most om my drink in.
all 3 won`t be renewing their season tickets unless by some miracle the
Rat leaves & Rafa stays. not going to happen, is it

  • JohnCornwell’sHair

Toon well organised but so short of any real quality.
Perez and Dubravka our best players by a mile today.
    Not good enough i’m afraid.

    • Kneebotherm8

      Perez man of the match.

      • Kenny

I would give it to the keeper, but then again i`m biased in as much as i wouldn`t start Perez, ever.

      • mentalman

Perez should have took the ball to the corner in injury time in the build up to their second

        • JohnCornwell’sHair

Or the 5 Toon players that back pedalled all the way to our box could’ve put a foot in.
          Lascelles was hopeless today.

          • Billmag

I couldn’t believe what was happening put a block in even if it means giving a free kick away.

        • Kneebotherm8

He got Man of the match from Sky sports today………total opposite to his last home game against West Ham…………….

    • Kenny

Dubravka can do it week in week out, Perez can`t, sad but true,

      • JohnCornwell’sHair

Can’t think of many Toon players that are good every week seems Perez just gets most of the stick.

        • Kenny

He gets well deserved stick, he`s now in his 5th season and has had a good 6 months in that time,
i hope this is his final season we need an upgrade

          • JohnCornwell’sHair

He’s not even close to being our worst player.

          • Kenny

I didn`t say he was the worst, what i said he`s not up to it at this level 1 good game in 5 or 6 isn`t good enough
you have noticed Rafa has been after a replacement for over 2 years

          • JohnCornwell’sHair

There’s 4 or 5 players need to be upgraded before him for me. Lascelles, Diame, Atsu, Joselu, Manquillo for starters.

          • Kenny

Don`t i know it my comment above makes that quite clear
problem is the Rat he just won`t spend the money.

          • Realist

And to think we could of sold lascelles for 25 million in summer.

          • mentalman

Your last sentence covers most of the team

          • Kenny

covers half of them. we have a 25 man squad about two thirds of them aren`t good enough

          • Billmag

If we had a decent number 10 he would be no where near the 1st team that’s a fact.

          • Kenny

As i`ve said the manager has been trying to get a number 10 since the summer of 2016.

          • Billmag

And LB and a Striker(since Demba left) and a DM.

    • DC1964

Absolutely zero goal threat as usual!

  • GToon

Years ago Ian Rush lead the line for 10 man Newcastle against Aston Villa and didn’t give their defenders a second on the ball. All Joselu had to do today was run around like a nutter for 5 mins and he barely got out of second gear. That is unforgivable. Rondon gave everything and should have been left on. With ten men you need the out ball to stick. I understand Rafa taking him off but I think he hadn’t thought of the zero impact Joselu would have. Shame.

    • mentalman

We’d have been better not having a striker and put an extra body in midfield or defence

  • DC1964

We are a workman like team who battle away each game, that’s it! We usually lose by one goal or win by one goal!

    • Leazes.

They’re capable of making a trophy cabinet but not filling it

      • DC1964

        Exactly

  • Kenny

Are the protests finished, will there be a boycott of a home match,
the fans proved today they couldn`t give a toss whatever Ashley does.
1 game, that`s all it was. they wouldn`t even do that.

    • Mrkgw

There was a few Wolves supporters in our end – Stewards asked that they removed their scarves. They went a threat but, celebrated the opening Wolves goal. Wonder whether that was a ploy to fill gaps?

    • Leazes.

Someone asked me a few years ago ‘what is the matter with Newcastle fans are they totally thick?’…..

….I’ve been looking for an answer to explain this phenomenon of people queing up to have their face slapped….everything else can be dismissed except the inescapable conclusion….

  • DC1964

Groundhog day at St James, every home game is the same! Its tedious beyond belief!
