Claudio Ranieri Newcastle press conference: “I think Rafa is more Italian than me”
Claudio Ranieri left management in England when Leicester City were still reigning champions after that remarkable season.
Only 21 months later he returned to take over a Fulham side at the bottom of the Premier League.
His first game was a rollercoaster 3-2 win in a six pointer relegation clash with Southampton but December hasn’t seen any ups on this particular rollercoaster, three defeats and only one added point, ironically a 1-1 draw against his old club Leicester.
Claudio Ranieri takes inspiration from Newcastle United, two points from nine games and then 14 from these last eight: ‘I look at Newcastle…they were down two months ago and are now safe (position at the moment), it could be a good inspiration.’
The popular new Fulham boss is full of praise for Newcastle’s manager: ‘This (Newcastle) team is strong and intensive, I think Rafa is more Italian than me.’
As well as praising the ‘warm’ Newcastle fans.
If Newcastle can get safe then I think many of our fans would choose the canny Claudio Ranieri to then also survive this season with his new club…but three points is all that matters on Saturday and Newcastle would go 10 points clear of Fulham and potentially seven above the relegation zone.
Claudio Ranieri pre-Newcastle press conference:
“Every match is crucial to survive or not and we will fight until the end.
“For us it’s very important these four matches in ten days, we want points wherever we can.
“We must make points in matches in a row.
“It is important to take confidence because the players are nervous, it’s normal because everything you do is not good.
“They are working well, who works well at the end will win.
“In every match we start so strongly and we fight until the end, if you continue in this way you can do something good.
“It is my job to give them the confidence and I believe we will be safe.
“I need a clean sheet.”
On Newcastle United:
“I look at Newcastle…they were down two months ago and are now safe (position at the moment), it could be a good inspiration and everything is important for us to survive.
“I am not surprised because he (Rafa) is a very good manager.
“It will be a tactical game.
“It will be tough because Newcastle are very physical and the crowd push behind them.
“The Newcastle fans are very warm but the players love to play against a team who has good fans.
“It is a bad thing when there is nobody at the stadium but when there is more it is good.”
“Anguissa is out for another ten days and Sessegnon I hope is available for Wolves of after.”
Mitro returns to Newcastle for first time:
“I hope when a player goes back to a previous club, he wants to show something more, and at Newcastle he didn’t do a good job.
“it is not easy to adapt to English football but I hope he has an outstanding match.”
“I saw him a long time ago in Valencia, he is intelligent and attentive and created a good group there.
“This (Newcastle) team is strong and intensive, I think Rafa is more Italian than me.”
