Newcastle United were in Checkatrade Trophy action on Tuesday night.

The Newcastle team taking part is an Under 21 side and they made it four wins in a row against senior teams from Leagues One and Two in the competition so far this season.

They did it the hard way, winning 5-3 on penalties against Macclesfield after a 1-1 draw, Elias Sorensen scoring for NUFC with his 18th goal of the season.

Sunderland also progressed to the last 16, their senior team beating League Two Notts County 2-0.

This means that we now have the opportunity for Newcastle’s kids to be drawn against the Sunderland first team.

The Checkatrade Trophy third round (last 16) draw takes place at 12.20pm on Saturday (8 December) live on Sky Sports.

The last 16 games are to be played week commencing Monday 7 January 2019.
