Watford boss can’t believe how his side didn’t win never mind losing
Javi Gracia cut a forlorn figure at the final whistle.
The Watford boss wondering just how on earth his team didn’t win, never mind the defeat.
Before the match, Watford fans were suggesting a three or four goal victory could be on the cards.
If the visitors had taken their chances then it could have been 4-0 at the break.
Attacking with pace and quality, Watford had Newcastle chasing shadows and if only their finishing had matched it, they would now be on 22 points after 11 games and in fifth place.
Instead Newcastle got the victory, somehow, and now sit outside the bottom three.
Javi Gracia declaring: ‘If you do not score and kill the game when you have the chance, something like today can happen…’
Watford have done well this season and it is a massive victory for Rafa’s team, no matter how it was achieved.
Watford had 16 shots, 58% possession and 9 corners, yet somehow managed only one effort on target, at times trying to walk it into the net.
“If you do not score and kill the game when you have the chance, something like today can happen…
“If you ask me about the game or the result.
“I can be disappointed today with the result because I think we have done many things well, but I can’t be disappointed with the way my team played.
“We can speak about how many players had a good chance to score; Stefano Okaka, Roberto Pereyra hit the crossbar, Adrian Mariappa, Isaac Success, a lot of players had clear chances.
“We dominated the first half.
“Creating the chances we have today when playing away against Newcastle is not easy.
“We now need to be demanding and improve.
“I think all of the players have played well today and we knew if we left space players like Shelvey would be able to create from the beginning,
“We needed the strikers to have good balance for the rest of the team and help us defend well.
“During the game I am demanding of them and I am frustrated with the result but not the way we played.”
