Danish forward Elias Sorensen was called up for first team training last week.
With the likes of Sterry, Lejeune, Muto, Shelvey and Lascelles all injured, the 19 year old striker got the opportunity to impress Rafa Benitez.
Newcastle fans wondered if the 19 year old hotshot might get a place on the bench against Bournemouth, instead it was back down to earth for the Danish striker as he was named in the Under 23s side that took on Southampton last Friday on the south coast, grabbing his 14th goal of the season to get a late 1-1 draw for NUFC with his only real chance of the game.
This was then followed by a midweek visit to Grimsby, an Under 21s NUFC side taking on the League Two side’s first team in the Checkatrade Trophy.
Elias Sorensen and his teammates dispatched Grimsby 3-2, which meant Newcastle were confirmed as group winners.
In the video footage below, you can see all three Newcastle goals, including the clever header Sorensen scores to make it 15 goals this season, a superb cross from Roberts.
The Danish striker also shows excellent perseverance on the first goal when catching the defender in possession and then set up Callum Roberts (an impressive nine goals as well for the winger).
Not forgetting of course the winner, Matty Longstaff executing a perfect free-kick to score the final goal, in front of the hardy 66 travelling fans!
Watch all three goals below and if you want to go straight to them, they are timed at 0.24, 0.40 and 1.50 on the video footage.
Newcastle now proceed to the knockout stage but won’t be meeting Sunderland just yet.
The Mackem first team also won their group with a 1-0 win at Morecambe on Tuesday night and progressed to the last 32.
At this stage it remains divided into North and South, with Newcastle getting a home tie as group winners and they will play one of the runners-up from the Northern groups (apart form the runners-up from their own group).
One of Bury, Lincoln, Macclesfield Town, Man City U21s, Oldham, Stoke U21s, or Walsall.
Newcastle will find out their opponents when the draw is made at 1pm on Friday, with the match to be played in early December.
As well as 15 goals altogether this season, Elias Sorensen now has 11 goals in his last eight appearances.
