Tell me why I don’t like Mondays – Newcastle United shocking statistics
Maybe other clubs do have it as bad but when it comes to extreme shocking statistics, Newcastle United seem to have more than their fair share.
Thankfully, Newcastle don’t tend to get too many of the Monday night TV slots, which is just as well.
In three days time though we have the first one of the season, Rafa’s team facing Burnley at Turf Moor.
It is just over a year since Newcastle last travelled to Turf Moor, that game also on Monday night TV for Sky Sports viewers.
A shocking game on 30 October 2017 ended in a 1-0 home victory, very few chances for either side.
However, that wasn’t the only shocking thing about it, as that was also the 14th time in a row that Newcastle had lost an away Monday game, almost all of them on a night.
A rare exception was Newcastle’s following Monday away game, on new year’s day earlier this year.
Maybe it was the fact it was daytime but NUFC actually played really well and should have beaten Stoke City by more than that single Ayoze Perez goal.
It was back to normal though when facing Everton in April, with Rafa’s team now safe they eased off the gas and lost 1-0 on the evening of Monday 23 April.
So the last 16 Monday away matches now shows a record of played 16, Won 1, Drawn 1, Lost 14. Making it 4 points out of a possible 48.
As for goals, it is Goals For 8, Goals Against 29.
Before this 16 game Monday away record containing just one victory, Newcastle United won on a Monday on their travels on Boxing Day 2011.
Goals from Hatem Ben Arfa and Demba Ba eventually overcame a shocking Bolton side who went on to be relegated, whilst Newcastle finished fifth.
