Sky Sports have given an injury update on the three players forced off against Watford at the weekend.

By the 52nd minute Rafa Benitez had used all three subs, with Jamaal Lascelles, Yoshinori Muto and Jonjo Shelvey all forced off.

After the game Rafa revealed that Jamaal Lascelles had problems with his shoulder in training in the lead up to the game but still started.

The diagnosis on him is positive, with Keith Downie of Sky Sports saying that the captain has trained on Tuesday and should be fine for Saturday’s game against Bournemouth.

However, the Sky Sports man says the outlook isn’t as positive for Muto and Shelvey, saying that the pair have muscle injuries and are unlikely to make that match in four days time.

Rafa Benitez will also consider the fact that there then follows a two week international break, so would be unlikely to risk anybody.

Ki looks a straightforward choice to play if Shelvey doesn’t make it, having been man of the match on Saturday.

Whilst Perez scored the winner and hopefully his confidence will now rise accordingly.

Even if Muto did make it, there would be a good chance of Rafa maybe switching to Perez alongside Rondon.

Maybe the most interesting will be to see if Lascelles comes straight back in after Fabian Schar did so well when he came on, the Swiss international definitely improving Newcastle’s ability to play the ball out from the back.

Rafa Benitez after having to make three subs due to injury and still beating Watford – Saturday 3 November 2018:

“In my opinion we deserved to win before today, but to do it today, with the team working so hard and with the fans behind us, was good.

“It is a great three points.

“We needed this first win to then have more confidence and hopefully we can play with the same intensity as we did today and score a couple more goals (in future games).

“We had three problems…three substitutions.

“But the reaction of the players was quite good against a very good team.

“A great three points and it was a difficult game as they (Watford) have confidence.

“We could have conceded (at the end) but we could have scored the second goal – a good game for the fans to watch.

“I’m really pleased with the performance and we needed the energy and commitment from everyone.

“There are a couple of muscle problems with Shelvey and Muto, Jamaal (Lascelles) had a little problem with his shoulder in a training session the other day but we we’ll have to wait a little bit and see how they are.

“For Muto, it was the calf, but too early to know what he has done.

“All three (substitutes) really contributed, we needed energy and commitment from everyone and the three players quickly focused and did what they had to do.

“They made a contribution because they were working hard but also on the ball they were quite good.

“Ayoze (Perez) was trying to hold the ball and to run, looking for a second ball.

“Ki was good on the ball and Schar also – we knew he had quality on the ball.

“The three of them gave us something and in a difficult game, we needed maybe those kind of things.”

I would have advocated dropping Shelvey anyway. 5-3-2. 5-3-2. 5-3-2.
    Or even 5-2-1-2.

    • Kenny

he went into the game carrying an injury.

      • Wor Lass

It sounds like he won`t make it anyway so it`s academic. He`s our best player but he hasn`t looked it so much this season – maybe he`s been carrying a niggle and a two week break will do him good.

Does anyone know if Schar can play at right back? Bournemouth have the pace and movement to cause havoc down the right side of our defence, just like Watford did.

I like Yedlin going forward however, he is a liability defensively.

Was just thinking the same, at this moment in time though I would play Schar instead of Lascelles.

Cause lascelles is in your bad books for talking about the nasty nasty man😂

No not really the lad hasn’t had a very good season up till now, his distribution has been poor imo he’s only young so I’m sure he will bounce back.

      That’s a great point,,

Whether in central defence, right back, or midfield, Schar needs to play, as was clearly apparent in the England v Swiss match. Our wide open right flank has been a longstanding problem – Yedlin? Lascelles? Shelvey? Ritchie?

I thought yedlin did really well on Saturday,, but it’s his pace that gets him out of trouble,, his awareness of danger is poor…

I like Yedlin. He often looks so vulnerable though which is why I question how much of a part the other three play in that
