Rafa Benitez Friday press conference and manager reveals total of five players set to miss Bournemouth

Rafa Benitez has been talking to the media on Friday afternoon.

Newcastle facing a buoyant Bournemouth team who sit sixth in the league.

Striker Callum Wilson was called up by England on Thursday, whilst Eddie Howe earlier today was named October’s manager of the month after picking up 10 points from a possible 12.

Last month Rafa’s Newcastle team picked up a single point but last Saturday’s first win of the season against Watford has hopefully set off some confidence and momentum.

Trying to build on that first win is going to be tough and Rafa has revealed the task is going to be even harder with his latest injury/fitness update.

Rafa has confirmed Muto and Shelvey haven’t even trained, so no chance of either of those playing.

However, everybody was expecting Jamaal Lascelles to be ok but Rafa says that despite the captain having a training session it will be difficult for him to face Bournemouth, the manager saying ‘all three could be out’ for Saturday.

With Florian Lejeune and Jamie Sterry already on the injured list, that is five players of Rafa’s squad set to be unavailable.

Rafa Benitez:

“Yoshinori Muto and Jonjo Shelvey have not trained.

“Jamaal Lascelles has had a training session…but it will be difficult for him.

“All three could be out.

“The contribution of the three players coming from the bench (against Watford) was key to us getting the three points.

“After an important win everyone is a bit happier and hopefully we can carry on with this feeling.

“You can feel the difference on the training pitch and in the city… the confidence is higher, but it is just one step forward.

“Bournemouth are in a very good position in the table – they are playing well, and playing with confidence.

“He (19 year old striker Elias Sorensen) is fine.

“He did well. We’re talking about a couple of training sessions (with the first team).

“He showed desire.”
