Now 15 goals for prolific Elias Sorensen as Newcastle kids make it trio of wins against league opposition
It is only mid-November yet Elias Sorensen has now notched an impressive 15 goals for Newcastle United.
The latest for the 19 year old came as an NUFC Under 21 team made it a trio of victories over league opposition in the Checkatrade Trophy.
Having already beaten League One Doncaster and League Two Notts County, the final group match saw Elias Sorensen and his teammates dispatch Grimsby 3-2, to add to the impressive nature of the results, they were all played away from home.
Newcastle confirmed as group winners despite falling behind to an early Grimsby goal, Elias Sorensen turning provider when setting Callum Roberts up for a 19th minute equaliser.
Then the young Danish striker made it 15 goals for the season and gave NUFC the lead, when heading in a cross from Roberts.
In an entertaining match, the home side equalised 10 minutes after half-time, only for United’s Matty Longstaff to win it in the 77th minute with an excellent free-kick.
The competition is a bit of a circus and played in front of poor crowds (an impressive 66 Newcastle supporters amongst the 547 attendance) but it has been excellent for NUFC’s young players, the fact they have beaten three league sides can’t be understated.
They now proceed to the knockout stage but won’t be meeting Sunderland just yet.
The Mackem first team also won their group with a 1-0 win at Morecambe last night and progressed to the last 32.
At this stage it remains divided into North and South, with Newcastle getting a home tie as group winners and they will play one of the runners-up from the Northern groups (apart form the runners-up from their own group).
One of Bury, Lincoln, Macclesfield Town, Man City U21s, Oldham, Stoke U21s, or Walsall.
Newcastle will find out their opponents when the draw is made at 1pm on Friday, with the match to be played in early December.
As well as 15 goals altogether this season, Elias Sorensen now has 11 goals in his last eight appearances
