Mark Lawrenson has been previewing the Newcastle v Watford game on Saturday.
Watford arrive on a high, 19 points already which have earned them seventh place, with a 3-0 victory over Huddersfield delivering the latest three points last weekend.
In contrast of course, Newcastle are still yet to win a game and languish in the relegation zone on only three points.
It could have been five points and already have seen them sitting outside the bottom three, if not for the fact that the Magpies managed not a single effort on target last Saturday at Southampton.
Mark Lawrenson believes that despite the form lines, Newcastle will beat Watford.
The BBC Sport pundit puts up two reasons.
He points to the 27 shots Newcastle managed against Brighton two weeks ago, saying that if they repeat that then ‘a couple of them are going to go in’, although the reality was that most of those shots were from distance and missing, the Brighton keeper only having two or three saves of any note to make.
Lawrenson’s second reason is that he simply feels that Newcastle ‘luck at St James Park is going to turn’ after starting the season with five defeats in a row at home.
This reasoning would all sound a little bit more believable, if Mark Lawrenson hadn’t used exactly the same reasoning (see below) before the Southampton match last weekend.
A week ago he forecast a comfortable 2-0 win for Rafa’s team saying ‘I see this game as their turn to win. The Magpies had plenty of chances against Brighton last weekend, with 27 shots at goal, but they could not take any of them. If they keep doing that, the goals will come – and so will their first win of the season.’
It is a bit like going horseracing and blindly backing whichever horse wears number one no matter what the form, eventually it will win and you will be proved right…
Here’s hoping Mark Lawrenson backs a Newcastle United winner very soon.
Mark Lawrenson talking to BBC Sport – Thursday 1 November 2018:
“Watford pummelled Huddersfield last week, while Newcastle’s wait for their first Premier League win of the season went on after they drew 0-0 at Southampton.
“On paper, this is another Hornets victory but I just have a feeling that Newcastle’s luck at St James’ Park is going to turn.
“The Magpies managed 27 shots without scoring in their defeat by Brighton in their last home game and, if they keep creating that many chances, a couple of them are going to go in.
“Prediction is Newcastle 2 Watford 0.”
Mark Lawrenson talking to BBC Sport – Thursday 25 October 2018:
“Southampton really needed their point at Bournemouth last time out because it ended a run of three straight defeats.
“But because Newcastle have sunk so low in recent weeks, I see this game as their turn to win.
“The Magpies had plenty of chances against Brighton last weekend, with 27 shots at goal, but they could not take any of them.
“If they keep doing that, the goals will come – and so will their first win of the season.
“Prediction is Southampton 0 Newcastle 2.”
