Harsh lesson for DeAndre Yedin and teammates in England 3 USA 0
It finished England 3 USA 0 and it was another harsh lesson/step on the learning curve for DeAndre Yedlin and his teammates.
The American squad still have no permanent manager and have embarked on a tough series of matches under their interim boss.
These last six matches in a five month stretch have seen them play France, Peru, Mexico, Colombia, Brazil and England, all teams that were competing in the World Cup in Russia. next up they face Italy on Monday.
Before the game, Rafa Benitez gave Yedlin a boost (see below), saying he was improving all of the time and working hard on his game.
However, up against better class opposition who controlled the game and killed it off in a two minute spell halfway through the first-half, it was never going to be easy for an attacking full-back such as the Newcastle defender.
Up against the exciting Jadon Sancho, Yedlin struggled at times before the break but stuck at it and I thought did ok second-half, plus he had a few decent moments going forward.
However, it was a team outclassed at times and certainly The Guardian review of the match did the Newcastle player no favours.
No visiting player got a lower mark than the 5 out of 10 awarded to Yedlin, who The Guardian reporter described as ‘Did nothing’ in the match.
England 3 USA 0 match ratings from The Guardian:
DeAndre Yedlin
Did nothing and did not enjoy facing Sancho in the first half. 5
Jadon Sancho
Had a scintillating first half, and his pass to Trent Alexander-Arnold was the ball of the game. Quiet thereafter. 7

Rafa Benitez speaking about DeAndre Yedlin to BBC Newcastle – Thursday 15 November:
“Because his characteristic is very fast, and he likes to go forward.
“Sometimes, this kind of player, they have more problems in defence.
“But he is quite focused on this part of his game, he is working hard.
“It is the same if you have a full-back that is not too big and is quite fast, normally they are not the best at defending.
“If you have a big one, normally he is not the best at attacking.
“I think he is improving and hopefully this year will also be an important year for him.
“Because his understanding of the game is getting better and better.”
