England play Croatia on Friday (12 October) and Spain on Monday (15 October).

Yet again neither Jamaal Lascelles or Jonjo Shelvey have crossed Gareth Southgate’s mind.

Despite a number of injuries/withdrawals hitting the squad, still no phone call(s) for the Newcastle pair.

Both players have impressed Newcastle fans and neutrals but seemingly not Gareth Southgate.

It isn’t even a case of thinking they should be in the first 11, or even necessarily the first 23 if everybody is fit…

You might be surprised/staggered to learn that the reality is that in the last 12 months Gareth Southgate has called up 51 (FIFTY ONE) players to his senior squad and yet neither Lascelles or Shelvey have been deemed good enough to be included.

I find it quite amazing.

I haven’t even heard of some of the 51 listed below and I also know for sure that the Newcastle pair are better than some of these characters below.

Wait till January when Mr Creosote sells them then see how quickly they get called up

  • Steven05

Lascelles already looks like a Liverpool player

Picture it. Go on, picture it.

    • Peaky

      Yup…got to agree…him & Van Dijk….the final piece of the Anfield jigsaw…

  • Mrkgw

Absolutely baffling and in particular, for the two overlooked, a bl00dy insult.

  • JohnnyH

I would say Jamal is already better than a few on the list as of now.

Bearing in mind these games are used to expose developing players to the international stage for the future, it’s got to be unsettling for him.

Further insult is the inclusion of Phil Jones who is an absolute donkey.

Thats why Southgate can’t beat the middle teams in international football competition he got lucky with World Cup draw

This actually goes back 9 years when Southgate was Middlesbrough manager and they’d got relegated with us, we went down because of Ashley and they went down because Southgate is clueless. We have Chris Hughton as manager and he makes little fuss, doesn’t go around claiming he’s going to get us promoted.

Down in the smoggy hell of Middlesbrough, a young manager is telling everyone who’ll listen he’s taking Boro back up, they’ll take the league by storm and nobody…especially not NUFC can stop them. By the October 20th we were top of the league and looking certainties already to win the league, Boro were slumped midtable, closer to relegation than promotion.

The axe falls and Southgate gets the chop, who does he blame though?

  • GeordieZebra

Exaggerating somewhat. 51 players including keepers, full backs, wingers and strikers. They’re not relevant at all.

In reality, Southgate has picked 4/5 centre halves above Lascelles that are contentious and similar number of midfielders v Shelvey.

I do believe both should be selected above Cahill, Dunk, Mawson, Cook, Chalobah etc but sensationalising is pointless.
